Intermediate Accountant
About the role
Davies Howe LLP is a leading boutique law firm focused on land development, expropriation, litigation and mediation. Our office is in downtown Toronto. We are growing and are looking for a dynamic and experienced finance professional to join our team.
This role is part of the firm’s controllership function and is responsible for the day-to-day accounting activities relating to the maintenance of accurate financial records as well as compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
Ideal candidates will be well-organized, inquisitive, detail-oriented and comfortable with dealing with financial data. Experience with PCLaw and Simplii accounting software is considered an asset.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform monthly full cycle accounting for management company ensuring all transactions are properly recorded, including month end journal and intercompany entries.
- Prepare and analyze monthly profit and Loss statement and balance sheet.
- Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations
- Manage all trust ledgers and trust bank account.
- Process trust transactions accurately and timely manner according to firm’s policy and procedure.
- Ensure compliance with Law Society trust account requirements.
- Process vendor invoices in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with required approvals.
- Prepare bi-monthly cash flow analysis and ensure appropriate funds are maintain in the bank accounts.
- Prepare and file HST/PST tax returns on a timely basis.
- Daily monitoring of bank transactions and ensure that all electronic cash receipts have been posted in the financial system.
- Support year end process including posting of adjusting entries, preparation of audit working papers and related analytics.
- Respond to vendor inquiries and communicate with vendor to resolve any account related discrepancies.
- Communicate with manager on a frequent basis regarding accounting questions, issues and advice.
Experience And Education
- Minimum 3 years of Legal Accounting experience is required.
- Accounting diploma or degree is required.
- Experience using PCLaw and Simplii softwares.
Skills And Qualifications
- Solid understanding of Law Society By-Laws as they relate to Trust Accounting.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with a solution-oriented approach.
- High degree of attention to detail.
- Proactive mindset and resourceful.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to complete work within deadlines.
- Microsoft Office skills, with strong Excel proficiency.
- Strong technical skills with the aptitude to learn new software quickly.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal) and are able to develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal staff and vendors.
- Legal Billing experience is an asset.
- Team player and flexible attitude.
- Comfortable working 100% on-site
