Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.The Sterile Supply Aide is responsible for collecting and delivering, cleaning, decontaminating, packaging, assembling and sterilizing instruments and supplies for the Surgical Suite and other user areas in the Agency.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1.Washes, cleans, decontaminates, checks, assembles and wraps or packages instruments, trays, sets and equipment for the Surgical Suite and other user departments in the Agency.
2.Operates ultra-sonic washer, washer sterilizer, steam autoclave and related processing equipment.
3.Monitors the cleaning and sterilizing process and records results; reports abnormalities to the supervisor.
4.Picks instrument sets and supplies for operative procedures according to established guidelines.
5.Maintains quota of unsterile and sterile supplies and equipment by restocking depleted supplies and reprocessing outdated sterile sets, bundles and supplies in the Surgical Suite.
6.Monitors supplies used in the section and advises supervisor when supplies need replenishing.
7.Fills sterile and unsterile supply requisitions from all user departments within the Agency.
8.Collects and delivers supplies from and to the Sterile Supply department and other user departments within the Agency.
9.Monitors instruments used on the Hospital Units for outdating and takes corrective action where necessary.
10.Prepares and documents supplies for transport to designated facilities and receives returned supplies, verifying returns against documentation.
11.Maintains cleanliness and tidiness of work area by washing cupboards, counter tops, shelves, tables, and other designated areas, storing items in the appropriate places.
12.As requested, performs errands for the Surgical Suite, such as delivery of specimens to the laboratory and copies of the O.R. slate to various departments.
13.Prepares statistics and maintains inventory files of equipment and supplies; forwards statistics to the Nursing Unit Manager or designate for review.
14.Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
- Completion of Grade 12. Completion of a Sterile Supply Processing course.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of medical and surgical asepsis.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job such as lifting, pushing carts, and standing.
- Ability to organize workload.
- Ability to operate related equipment such as washer sterilizer, ultra-sonic washer and steam sterilizer.
- Ability to communicate and deal effectively with all levels of staff, verbally and in writing.
