Position Overview
Green Graphite Technologies is seeking an Operations Manager for its graphite purification demonstration plant in Mississauga, Ontario. The ideal candidate for this role will have experience in managing technical teams in both the R&D and operations settings. .
This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer with experience in pilot plants, demonstration facilities, or small-scale industrial operations, who can bridge engineering design, construction execution, and operational readiness. The successful candidate will take ownership of site execution, including contractor coordination, equipment installation, commissioning, and transition into stable operations.
Key Responsibilities
Plant Setup & Execution
Working closely with the VP Engineering, lead on-site execution of the demo plant optimization, including review and interpretation of engineering drawings (P&IDs, layouts, isometrics), and ensure work is completed safely, on schedule, and to specifications.
Contractor & Vendor Management
Manage installation contractors and service providers, oversee scope, timelines, and deliverables for all external vendors, support procurement of equipment and services, and resolve technical and execution issues in real time.
Commissioning & Start-Up
In collaboration with the VP Engineering and the Chief Technology Officer, lead commissioning planning and execution with respect to mechanical completion checks, pre-startup safety reviews, equipment testing and loop checks, develop and execute startup procedures for the purification reactor and supporting systems, and troubleshoot process and equipment issues during initial runs.
Operations Management
Establish and oversee safe, efficient demo plant operations, develop or review standard operating procedures (SOPs) and maintenance practices, co-ordinate operators and technical staff during demonstration campaigns, monitor performance and drive continuous improvement. Oversight of various pilot-scale activities and R&D tests will also fall under the responsibility of the Operations Manager. The position will involve interfacing with Green Graphite Technologies’ technical staff, including the VP Engineering, the Chief Technology Officer, the Chief Innovation Officer, the Demo Plant Manager, the Head of Analytical Services & Quality Control, and junior engineers.
Health, Safety & Compliance
Ensure compliance with applicable safety standards and regulations, implement safe work practices for high-temperature systems and chlorine gases, and lead hazard assessments and risk mitigation efforts.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field, with a minimum of 5–10 years of relevant experience in pilot plant, demo plant, or small industrial facility setup and operation for metallurgical, chemical processing or materials production. Experience with thermal processes (kilns, furnaces, reactors), gas-solid systems or high-temperature operations would be desirable.
Key Skills & Competencies
The ideal candidate will be highly hands-on and execution-focused, with a practical troubleshooting mindset, strong ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams, and the ability to balance technical detail with project delivery. Candidates need to feel comfortable working in a fast-moving environment.
Work Environment
The work will be primarily on-site at demo plant in Mississauga, Ontario, and will involve a combination of field work (supervision of operations), and co-ordination and planning activities. The position may require extended hours during operations.
