About the role

Department: Clinical Records

The Health Records Professional will accurately analyze, code, audit, release and retain medical records as required by legislation and hospital policy. The quality of the coding directly impacts the organization’s funding model and assists with various programs such as Wait Time Strategies for the Emergency Department, Stroke Program, and Joint Initiative as well as nationally to help improve overall health of Canadians by helping leaders make better decisions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Experience/Knowledge

  • Graduate from a Health Information Services Program required
  • Certification and ongoing active membership with the Canadian Health Management Association (CHIMA) required
  • Minimum three (3) to five (5) years' experience in outpatient coding and abstracting is required
  • Sound understanding of CACS grouping/Assignment, QBP capture and Ontario Health funding practices required
  • Expert knowledge of the mandated requirements set out by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) and Ontario Health with regards to the coding and abstracting of patient information is required
  • Knowledge of information management issues including privacy, security, confidentiality, collection, storage, retrieval, retention and documentation of patient information is required
  • Knowledge of various legislations (Public Hospitals Act, PHIPA, FIPPA, Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, PIPEDA) an asset

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple demands and deadlines simultaneously
  • Strong analytical thinking skills with an ability to work independently, in small groups, and in team environments
  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure personal safety, safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
  • Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events required
  • Must demonstrate good attendance
  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is an asset

The North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) is a unique healthcare organization with three primary roles. It provides acute care services to North Bay and its surrounding communities, it is the district referral centre providing specialist services for smaller communities in the area, and it is the specialized mental health service provider serving all of northeast Ontario

NBRHC has 389 beds and numerous outpatient and outreach services in North Bay and throughout the northeast region.

NBRHC is one of four major acute care hospitals serving northeast Ontario; the others being Sault Area Hospital, Timmins and District Hospital and Health Sciences North (Sudbury). The area is also served by small community hospitals like Mattawa and West Nipissing General hospitals.

NBRHC’s Regional Mental Health Services provides inpatient beds in North Bay and Sudbury and outpatient and outreach services that throughout the region—from Hudson Bay to Muskoka from Sault Ste. Marie to the Quebec border.

A major teaching centre for students in medicine, psychiatry, nursing and allied health professions, NBRHC is proud to be affiliated with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Nipissing University, Canadore College and several other Ontario colleges and universities.
