Course Description

An examination of significant themes in intellectual history through a reading of major works in philosophy and literature that shed light on the conceptual foundations of contemporary life.

This course engages students in thinking through what knowledge is; how it is built, refined, circulated, and put into practice; and how it shapes and is shaped by social structures and concerns. Particular attention will be paid to the nature and intersections of the Arts and the Sciences, and to the work of disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge in society.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will have (or be near completion of) a Ph.D. in Philosophy, Literature, English, History, or a cognate discipline/interdisciplinary field. They will have familiarity with the inquiry-style of teaching commonly used in the Arts & Science Program, and will be able to provide evidence of successful university teaching at the undergraduate level, including prior experience with similar interdisciplinary, student-centred teaching approaches. They will have an in-depth grasp of subject matter and scholarship relevant to the course (with preference given to candidates with a successful record of teaching such material), an active program of interdisciplinary research and/or practice of relevance to the course focus, and experience working effectively` in interdisciplinary contexts. The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate their capacity to create an equitable, inclusive, and just educational experience.
