About the Team: Huawei Canada's Advanced Optical Technology Lab focuses on advanced R&D in high-performance optical communications and networking. Our expert team specializes in transmission algorithms, systems, physics, and optical network management. The lab engages in projects ranging from deep research to developing key product features, actively participating in standards organizations and collaborative research with partners. About the Job:

  • Explore innovative photonic technologies and contribute to the development of advanced interconnects and system-level optimizations.
  • Contribute to research and evaluation of optical and photonic technologies for AI compute interconnects.
  • Analyze technology trends and support feasibility studies on applying optics to distributed AI workloads.
  • Assist in prototyping, testing, and validating new concepts in collaboration with design and product teams.
  • Support modeling of system-level performance and explore how photonic advances can improve computing efficiency.
  • Document findings and contribute to technical discussions and reports.

Job requirements

About the ideal candidate:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Photonics, Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience in at least one area: photonic integration, optical interconnects, fiber optics, or optical telecommunication systems.
  • Familiarity with AI computing (e.g., GPU clusters for LLM training) and an interest in how compute requirements connect to interconnect technologies.
  • Ability to learn quickly and contribute to cross-disciplinary projects.
  • Industry or project related experience in optical communication systems, photonics, or system-level optimization is an asset.
  • Expertise in LLM and AI computing at scale is an asset.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to collaborate across teams is an asset.
