ABOUT THE ROLE
Peavey Mart is a growing multi-unit retailer based in Red Deer County, Alberta. We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Financial Controller to lead our accounting function across all locations. This is a critical role for an organized, detail-driven finance professional who thrives on owning the full accounting cycle, safeguarding cash flow, and delivering the financial visibility our leadership team relies on to make decisions.
The Financial Controller will manage a small accounting team, oversee day-to-day financial operations across multiple retail locations, and ensure accurate, timely reporting to ownership and management.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Full-Cycle Accounting & Financial Operations Own the full accounting cycle across all store locations, from journal entries and reconciliations through to month-end and year-end close. Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable, including reviewing and approving supplier payments. Oversee payroll processing to ensure accuracy and compliance. Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts, ensuring consistency across all business units.
Cash Flow & Payment Management
Monitor and manage cash flow, forecasting short- and long-term cash needs. Review, approve, and release supplier payments, EFTs, and wire transfers within established authorization limits. Manage banking relationships, merchant services, and daily cash/point-of-sale reconciliations across stores. Identify and act on opportunities to improve working capital and reduce carrying costs.
Reporting & Analysis
Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports. Deliver store-level and consolidated P&L reporting, budget-to-actual analysis, and KPI dashboards for ownership. Prepare annual budgets and rolling forecasts in collaboration with department leaders. Coordinate year-end working papers and act as the primary liaison with external accountants. Ensure timely and accurate filing of GST and other statutory/regulatory remittances.
Team Leadership & Internal Controls
Supervise, train, and mentor accounting and bookkeeping staff, including reviewing data entry and account reconciliations. Establish and maintain strong internal controls and approval workflows across all locations. Develop and document accounting policies and procedures to support a growing, multi-unit operation. Partner with store managers and department heads on cost control, inventory accounting, and shrinkage analysis.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
CPA designation (or actively pursuing) strongly preferred; equivalent experience will be considered. 5+ years of progressive accounting/controllership experience, ideally in multi-location retail or a similarly fast-paced environment. Proven experience managing full-cycle accounting, cash flow, and payment approvals. Prior experience supervising accounting or bookkeeping staff. Strong proficiency with accounting software and advanced Excel skills. Experience with retail point-of-sale and inventory systems is an asset. Excellent organizational skills with high attention to detail and the ability to manage competing deadlines across multiple locations. Strong communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
WHAT WE OFFER
Salary range of $75,000–$95,000 per year, commensurate with experience and designation Competitive benefits package (health, dental, and related coverage). A growing local employer with room to shape the finance function as the company expands.
