This is a hybrid position with a mix of in-office and remote work. Work arrangements will be discussed with hiring managers per departmental guidelines.
Your Role
This Lead/Manager role is an entry point into management at Radio-Canada for someone looking to take their first steps in a leadership capacity. You’ll be part of the Back Office division, which supports the teams that develop products for our digital audiences. Back Office teams provide specialized expertise, shared APIs and a common infrastructure for various Radio-Canada products. Essentially, whenever a digital user consumes content on a Radio-Canada platform, the Back Office is helping make it happen behind the scenes.
In this role, you’ll directly manage a team of five to eight people. Our management approach is both hierarchical and matrix-based, with a focus on managers actively participating in their team’s activities. This means you’ll need to understand more than one technical discipline (Developer, DevOps, QA, etc.). You’ll be managing individuals with wide-ranging expertise, all within the realm of software development, and potentially across multiple teams (for example, managing QAs, Devs and the Technical Lead on two different teams). Your responsibilities will include understanding your teams’ day-to-day realities, project road maps and challenges in order to provide effective support and help them achieve their various goals collaboratively. You’ll work closely with all members of leadership on your teams and will be directly responsible for fostering a positive team culture within each.
What You’ll Do
- Provide daily support and assistance to members of leadership (PM, Lead, PO, Architect, etc.) on your teams in their decision-making, and ensure all relevant aspects have been considered when decisions are made.
- Report on the overall health of your teams to your superiors and, in conjunction with colleagues in other departments, take necessary steps to keep key performance indicators on track (in the green zone).
- Ensure your teams operate efficiently and that development processes are regularly reviewed and optimized.
- Apply the performance management process for each person within your management scope.
- Oversee the full hiring process within your teams, from creating job descriptions to the final offer of employment.
- Manage part of the onboarding process for new employees and ensure their smooth integration into their new teams.
- Attend meetings with external vendors to monitor service delivery and contribute to contract negotiations for certain products within your area of expertise.
- Ensure your teams have access to the necessary software, licences and cloud environments for their work.
- Plan required training for employees within your management scope and teams.
- Champion various initiatives, whether they originate from Digital Media management or are suggestions you bring forward.
- Continuously optimize the operational efficiency of your teams and contribute to improving the operational efficiency of Digital Media overall.
- Manage the costs of licences and services used by your teams and implement mechanisms to monitor these costs.
Key Technologies and Tools Used by Back Office Teams
- Primarily C# (.NET Core).
- Blazor.
- React.
- TypeScript.
- MongoDB.
- GraphQL (Apollo).
- NodeJS.
- Azure Service Bus, Azure Functions.
- Content indexing with Elasticsearch.
- Git (via Azure DevOps).
- Azure DevOps (build and deployment pipelines).
- Visual Studio / Rider.
- Jira.
What You Bring
- 10 years’ software development experience across various roles.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or a combination of a degree and equivalent experience.
- No prior people management experience required (this is an entry-level management role).
- Strong soft and interpersonal skills.
- A collaborative team player who understands the importance of aligning with colleagues in other departments and involving them in discussions before taking action.
- A collaborative mindset with the ability to recognize the contributions of others to team and individual success.
- Excellent communication skills (ability to explain technical concepts clearly).
- Bilingualism (English and French) an asset. (Please be aware that you will regularly work with English-speaking colleagues, and while you aren’t required to speak English, they aren’t required to speak French. A basic understanding of written and spoken English is therefore necessary).
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next
step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:
