Red Deer Public Schools is seeking a qualified and compassionate Family School Liaison Counsellor (FSLC) to support the social, emotional, and mental well-being of students and families in a school-based setting.
This position will collaborate with district staff, school-based staff and community service providers to promote mental wellness and support emotional development of students as part of the Learning Support Team. The Family School Liaison Counsellor will also provide a variety of intervention services in collaboration with students and their families. FSLCs have experience in short-term, skills-focused counseling to address various issues, including anger management, anxiety, grief, and relationship problems.
The hours of work will follow a typical work schedule 8:00am - 4:00pm, however, flexibility to work outside the regular schedule is essential. This position is a 10 month position, following the school calendar. Responsibilities
- Collaborate with school-based staff to implement skill-based and strength-focused counselling and interventions for children and youth, including resiliency, social skills, problem-solving, self-awareness, anxiety reduction, and stress management
- Provide one-to-one counselling for students and families
- Facilitate counselling and skill-building groups
- Deliver classroom presentations and mental health programming
- Provide crisis response and intervention within schools
- Assist families with referrals to community-based agencies and resources
- Use time flexibly to meet the needs of students and families
- Maintain and document case plans and clinical records in accordance with legal and professional standards
- Participate in collaborative planning and supervision meetings
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, or a related health or social sciences field preferred
- Registration or eligibility with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) or College of Alberta Psychologists
- Experience counselling children and adolescents preferred
- Knowledge of addiction, mental health, and trauma-informed practice
- Experience or willingness to support children impacted by intergenerational trauma is an asset
- Familiarity with the developmental, educational, emotional, social, and recreational needs of children, youth, and families
- Confidence delivering mental health programming and comfort with public speaking
- Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and time-management skills
