Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • Completion of a Community College course in a related discipline is required.
  • Licensed Practical Nurse or other nursing training preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum one year of directly related experience required, preferably in a hospital/medical setting.
  • Experience using and maintaining nursing care equipment required, including ability to troubleshoot malfunction and perform minor repairs.
  • Experience operating audio-visual equipment required.
  • Experience with UM Procurement (EPIC) ordering system preferred.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and equipment used in nursing required.
  • Microcomputer skills using Microsoft Office Suite of programs required.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

Key responsibilities

  • Organizes equipment for Skills/Simulation Labs/Nurse Practitioner (NP) room/Clinical Competence Assessment (CCA) room prior to beginning of each academic term.
  • Acts as a resource for Skills/Simulation/NP/CCA lab staff.
  • Collects information and makes known to instructors, new/current Policy and Procedures in the Skills Labs as WRHA changes are implemented.
  • Sets up bedside equipment and patient units in the Skills Lab, e.g., intravenous and oxygen administration, catheterization, and nasogastric intubation, for practice and demonstration.
  • Serves as a resource for the Simulation Operators relating to required supplies.
  • Fabricates and adapts medical and teaching equipment to simulate real life scenarios per instructors' direction.
  • Liaises with Director regarding lab preparation for special bookings (e.g. Tours).
  • Performs routine maintenance of specialized medical/nursing equipment in Skills Labs, repairs equipment as needed, provides information to the Director, and arranges for repairs.
  • Operates specialized medical/nursing equipment that requires theoretical and practical knowledge.
  • Calibrates and tests medical/nursing equipment as required.
  • Keeps up to date with safety policies (e.g., disposal of sharps), lab equipment techniques, and equipment changes.
  • Participates in regular debriefing meetings with lab instructors on lab set up, techniques and modifications.
  • Demonstrates equipment operations and procedures to students and Simulation operators.
  • Collects and acts as liaison with secondary sources for acquisition and maintenance of supplies.
  • Checks the accuracy of shipment and follows up as necessary, e.g., if order is incomplete or equipment is not working.
  • Updates asset inventory and ensures equipment has asset tags.
  • Arranges for disposal of equipment, ensures Asset Inventory Disposal forms are completed and updates asset database.
  • Develops and prepares visual educational aids to best meet educational needs of students.
  • Learns about new nursing/medical procedures, keeps informed of developments in related fields to learn new techniques and adapts current procedures as WRHA changes are implemented.
  • Participates in the hiring of student skills lab technicians.
  • Provides orientation and training for student skills lab technicians.
  • Assigns, directs, and supervises work of student skills lab technicians and maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains a system for ordering of supplies, recommends purchase of some equipment based on research on current developments.
  • Maintains supply of linen for the labs, arranging for pick-up and delivery.
  • Maintains and updates policy and procedure manuals/monographs for lab and those from the regional health authorities.
  • Assists faculty and students with lab setup for CANU, identifies items to be used and submits requests for ordering of supplies.
  • Assists faculty and provides support with setup for immunization clinics by 4th year students, identifies items to be used and submits requests for ordering of supplies.
  • Assists faculty and provides support with gathering and set up of equipment for IPE Day Shift, identifies items to be used and submits request for ordering of supplies.
  • Assists with scheduling and planning of open lab practice times.
  • Cleans labs including dusting and washing, excluding floors.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of lab facilities on a daily basis.
  • Ensures appropriate cleaning of mannequins used in skills lab on a daily basis and end of term.
