Job Summary

This appointment is for a Research Technician position to provide technical support for the comparison/evaluation of blood samples from Ontario and BC on various Lyme serology assays. Tasks include sample receiving, aliquoting, sample storage, experimental design, performing experimental assays/procedures relating to research on California serogroup virus related mosquito surveillance and assay development by employing molecular biology techniques and analysis software.

Organizational Status The applicant will report to the principal investigator and the Technical Coordinator on the project, and they will work with a broad team of scientists at BCCDC Public Health Laboratory (PHL), UBC, and a number of healthcare and academic collaborators. The position is based at the BCCDC PHL. The applicant will work on-site due to the technical nature of the position.

Work Performed

  • Sample receiving and cataloguing
  • Sample preparation/aliquoting
  • Performing Molecular assays
  • Organizing long-term storage of clinical samples
  • Ordering reagents and materials for the above activities
  • Troubleshooting assays/improvements to assays
  • Keeping meticulous records of their work and results
  • Summarizing and analysis of results using various analysis tools like Excel and Geneious
  • Analysing data on Lyme project
  • Assist writing protocol, report, paper as needed

Consequence of Error/Judgement The applicant is required to conduct all activities in an ethical and careful manner. Any procedures or data recorded as part of this research must be accurate and must accurately reflect the work performed. Errors made could influence the ability of researchers to interpret data correctly, delay the timely completion of work, and thus compromise the results of research projects. This would impact the credibility of the PI and other team members.

Supervision Received Most aspects of work will be assigned and then carried out by the applicant under the supervision of the Technical Coordinator. Feedback will be provided by the project PI on a scheduled basis through one-on-one meetings with the applicant.

Minimum Qualifications High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or graduation from a technical college or institute is preferred.

  • At least one years’ experience in a laboratory performing molecular biology and/or ELISA techniques, and previous experience with serological assays and sequencing is strongly preferred.

  • The successful candidate must have the organization and laboratory skills to routinely process larger batches of specimens in a high-throughput setting.

  • They must also be accustomed to using multichannel pipettes and have precise pipetting skills for procedures with high-risk for sample cross-contamination.

  • Experience validating and troubleshooting assays an asset.

  • The candidate must have the ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail, and interact with a diversity of people in a respectful and effective manner
