Position Summary
The Senior Government Affairs and Public Policy Officer supports NCCM’s Government Affairs and Community Engagement departments by implementing advocacy strategies, coordinating grassroots mobilization, and building relationships with government officials and community leaders. This role requires a collaborative and proactive approach to drive NCCM’s public policy agenda, facilitate government engagement with Muslim communities, and contribute to the fight against Islamophobia.

Key Responsibilities
Government Relations
– Develop and implement NCCM’s government relations and public policy strategies in Alberta in alignment with organizational goals.
– Serve as a key advisor to the senior leadership team on legislative and policy matters.
– Lead on the identification of emerging public policy issues and proactively develop NCCM’s positions.
Community Engagement
– Collaborate with NCCM’s Community Engagement team to mobilize grassroots advocacy campaigns.
– Coordinate community consultations and engagement on public policy initiatives.
– Serve as a local ambassador for NCCM, representing the organization in mosques, events, and other community spaces.
Policy Support
– Conduct research and analysis on policy files to inform advocacy efforts.
– Draft policy briefs, reports, and materials for use in government relations and public advocacy.
– Maintain accurate records of government relations activities using NCCM’s shared drive.
Advocacy and Public Mobilization
– Organize and support advocacy events, workshops, and educational sessions.
– Facilitate connections between government officials and Muslim communities to address concerns and build relationships.
Qualifications
– Minimum 7–10 years of experience in government relations, public policy, parliamentary affairs, political offices, public service, advocacy, or related fields.
– Extensive knowledge of the federal government, Parliament of Canada, cabinet processes, and federal policy development.
– Demonstrated experience engaging with elected officials, senior public servants, and national stakeholders.
– Exceptional policy analysis, research, and writing skills.
– Strong understanding of legislative and regulatory processes.
– Outstanding interpersonal, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities.
– Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
– Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced advocacy environment.
– Commitment to advancing human rights, equity, and justice, with an understanding of issues affecting Canadian Muslim communities.
– Bilingualism (English and French) is considered a significant asset.
– Ability to travel periodically across Canada as required
