The City is making a transformational cultural shift on how we approach Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). As a Safety Training Specialist within Occupational Health and Safety, your character, and commitment to building strong and trusted relationships with partners will be critical during this cultural shift. The Safety Training Specialist role requires exceptional communication and customer service skills, training design knowledge, occupational health and safety knowledge, time-management practices, and multi-tasking skills. Reporting to the Leader, Business Excellence, you will work closely with the Occupational Health and Safety Team to design and build quality safety training programs, courses and materials. You will also collaborate with City Learning and Employee Development teams, subject matter experts, and project sponsors to conduct needs assessments and propose learning solutions. Primary duties include:
- Work with various areas across City business units to strategically assess safety training, learning, and development needs and develop course outlines and learning objectives for OHS and the Corporation.
- Using a variety of software as well as best practices in instructional methodology and adult learning, develop interactive safety training content and videos.
- Research and extract technical information to develop safety training content. Assess available training and obtain feedback from learners and subject matter experts to validate content and identify and propose solutions for training gaps.
- Create and maintain accuracy of instructional materials, including eLearning courses, videos, reference materials, instructor guides, knowledge checks, and student manuals. Ensure materials are aligned to OHS legislation, industry standards, corporate policy, and internal/external auditing expectations.
- Mentor training instructors on course delivery and design, facilitation techniques and evaluation tools.
- Develop and maintain a library of safety training courses and compliance trackers in the Learning Management System (LMS). Centralize safety trainings that impact business units across The City.
- Coordinate curriculum facilitation and delivery with external service providers.
- Support and provide oversight of training administration, including training registration, completion and records.
- Conduct needs assessments and skills gap analyses to identify training priorities and opportunities.
Qualifications
- A degree in Commerce, Education, Adult Education, or a related Training field with at least 5 years of experience in learning and curriculum development and/or instructional design.
- Experience must include curriculum design, learning theory, research, extraction of technical content, and technical writing.
- Knowledge of SumTotal, Learning Management System (LMS) administration, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Articulate Storyline will be considered an asset.
- Proficiency in Learning Management Systems, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and Content Server will be considered an asset.
- Success in this position requires consulting, research and problem-solving skills, and effective communication skills with a focus on relationship building to help coach and develop employees.
- Strong communication skills are needed for conflict resolution and to create an environment conducive to learning.

Workstyle
- This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Position Type: 1 Permanent & 1 Temporary (up to 22 months)
Location: 201 8 Avenue SE
Compensation: Pay Grade 10 $42.62 - 56.97 per hour
Days of Work: This position typically works a 5 day
work week, with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.
Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
