The Opportunity
The Director, Signage, Wayfinding & Experiential Design (EXD) leads the strategic, creative, and technical direction of experiential design, wayfinding, and signage programs across diverse built‑environment projects. This role oversees multidisciplinary design teams, partners closely with Creative Directors and Project Managers, and serves as a senior client-facing leader. The Director is responsible for delivering innovative, narrative-driven design solutions while ensuring design excellence, operational efficiency, and alignment with organisational standards and brand values.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
- Provide creative and strategic leadership across all signage, wayfinding, and EXD projects.
- Set the vision, design direction, and quality standards for the EXD discipline.
- Mentor and guide designers, senior designers, and project leads to foster a high‑performing, collaborative studio culture.
- Support business development efforts, including proposals, pitches, portfolio development, and client presentations.
- Drive innovation in materials, technologies, storytelling, and human‑centred design.
Project Delivery
- Oversee end-to-end delivery of wayfinding, signage, and experiential design projects—from concept through implementation.
- Ensure design strategies, documentation packages, graphic systems, and technical specifications meet project requirements and industry standards.
- Support senior team members in developing conceptual renderings, artwork, design intent drawings, and storytelling components.
- Review and approve all major design milestones to ensure alignment with project goals, budgets, and timelines.
Client Engagement
- Act as a senior point of contact for key clients, maintaining strong relationships and providing strategic guidance.
- Lead design workshops, visioning sessions, and presentations with executive stakeholders.
- Translate client goals and user needs into actionable design frameworks and wayfinding strategies.
Operational Management
- Partner with Project Managers to forecast resources, manage team capacity, and ensure financially healthy project delivery.
- Oversee adherence to organisational processes, including documentation, QA/QC, timesheets, expenses, and project reporting.
- Support recruiting, onboarding, and capability development within the EXD team.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional experience in experiential graphic design, wayfinding, signage, environmental design, architecture, or related fields.
- Proven leadership experience managing multidisciplinary creative teams and guiding end‑to‑end project delivery.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating large‑scale signage, wayfinding, and experiential design projects across sectors such as transportation, healthcare, cultural, mixed‑use, corporate, or public realm.
- Expert knowledge of signage systems, wayfinding strategy, fabrication methods, materials, and implementation processes.
- Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop); familiarity with diagramming and mapping tools preferred.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience engaging senior clients and stakeholders.
Strong strategic thinking abilities, with a track record of translating complex user and client needs into clear design frameworks.
Preferred: Experience using 3D tools (Rhino, SketchUp, Revit), working in architecture/interior design environments, or delivering multi‑site or international projects.
Strong understanding of accessibility requirements, building codes, and best practices in wayfinding and experiential design.
