About the role

Job Overview
Boart Longyear is seeking Maintenance Apprentices (3rd, 4th, or 5th Year) to support preventive and corrective maintenance activities within our manufacturing operations. This role is designed for registered apprentices progressing toward Millwright 433A or Electrician 309A certification.

Maintenance Apprentices work under the guidance of licensed journeypersons to maintain production equipment and facility systems, contributing to safe, efficient operations while continuing their technical development in a unionized manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in performing preventive maintenance on production machinery and facility systems in accordance with maintenance schedules.
  • Support troubleshooting and repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment under supervision.
  • Assist with replacement of worn or damaged components, equipment alignment, and basic calibration tasks.
  • Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and maintenance manuals with guidance from journeypersons.
  • Accurately document work performed, parts used, and observations in maintenance logs or CMMS.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and production issues alongside licensed technicians.
  • Maintain compliance with all safety procedures, including lock-out/tag-out and PPE requirements.
  • Participate in on-the-job training and demonstrate continuous skill development.
  • Perform other reasonable duties as assigned.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Technical Foundation: Working knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical systems appropriate to apprenticeship level.
  • Troubleshooting Support: Ability to assist in identifying equipment issues and learning root-cause analysis techniques.
  • Preventive Maintenance Awareness: Familiarity with PM concepts and maintenance best practices.
  • Safety Focus: Strong commitment to workplace safety and adherence to established procedures.
  • Documentation Skills: Ability to complete work orders and maintenance records accurately.
  • Communication: Clear communication with supervisors, journeypersons, and production teams.
  • Learning Agility: Willingness to learn, take direction, and apply feedback in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Education & Certification:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Registered Millwright 433A or Electrician 309A Apprentice.
    • Must be in 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of apprenticeship.
  • Experience:

    • Minimum 2–3 years of related industrial or manufacturing maintenance experience consistent with apprenticeship level.
    • Exposure to CNC, automated, or high-volume production equipment is considered an asset.

Languages: English required.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

  • Work Environment: Manufacturing shop floor.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs as required.
