Unity Health Toronto, comprised of Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital, works to advance the health of everyone in our urban communities and beyond. Join our St. Michael’s Hospital team as we work to put patients and families at the centre of everything we do, in the role of Speech-Language Pathologist in our Voice & Swallow Clinic within the ENT Department.

The Speech-Language Pathology Team is a dynamic service across all hospital programs. We are seeking an experienced clinician to provide assessment and management for adults with swallowing and communication disorders.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary role of a Speech-Language Pathologist is to provide evaluation and management of swallowing and communication disorders. Other activities include:

  • Conduct evaluations of voice function, including perceptual, acoustic and aerodynamic assessments of voice.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for patients with voice, upper airway and swallowing disorders, using evidence-based approaches
  • Provide therapy for a range of voice conditions, including vocal fold lesions, muscle tension dysphonia, post-surgical rehabilitation and irritable larynx syndrome
  • Complete stroboscopy and indirect laryngoscopy for dysphonia and dysphagia, as well as modified barium swallow studies for assessment of dysphagia
  • Conduct videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) and fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) assessments for outpatients.
  • Works effectively as a member of an interprofessional team, collaborating with other disciplines to provide comprehensive patient care.
  • Contributes to the academic mandate of the organization as an educator, resource or support for staff and members of the academic and professional community.
  • Identifies and addresses educational needs for patients and their families.
  • Demonstrates commitment to ongoing professional development in order to continue to provide optimal patient care.
  • Is committed to and participates in ongoing quality improvement and/or research in the organization.
  • Provides patient care in accordance with all professional and organizational standards.
  • Is committed to providing anti oppressive and accessible care for all patients.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be currently licensed by and in good standing with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO) for practice in all applicable clinical areas.
  • Must hold a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology (or equivalent).
  • Current BLS (or willingness to complete within probationary period).
  • Experience working with voice disorders, gender-affirming voice, professional voice and community-based dysphagia management is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with videofluoroscopy, and holds current certification or is willing to obtain training in Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile (MBSImp) training.
  • Experience with FEES/endoscopy is an asset.
  • Knowledge of voice assessment tools (including acoustic assessment analysis software, PRAAT or Visipitch), and voice rehabilitation techniques (such as LMRVT, flow phonation, CTT) is preferred.
  • Certification in LMRVT, SPEAK OUT! Is preferred.
  • Excellent communication, critical thinking and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent time management, organizational and prioritization skills as relates to patient care.
  • Demonstrated advocacy, commitment to and involvement with profession preferred (e.g. involvement with professional association, representation on relevant committees).
