The**Control Systems Specialist – Commissioning & Start-Up (C&SU)**is responsible for supporting the configuration, programming, testing, and commissioning of industrial control systems in heavy industrial environments. This role ensures all activities are executed safely while meeting operational, engineering, and cybersecurity requirements.
The successful candidate will work closely on site 2 weeks in 2weeks off, 11-hour days, with engineering, commissioning, and operations teams to ensure control systems and associated field devices function as designed and meet project specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure all work is performed safely and in compliance with site safety policies and industrial cybersecurity requirements.
- DevelopPLC and DCS programsbased on engineering inputs including P&IDs, control narratives, and design documentation.
- Test, modify, and updatePLC and DCS programsto verify functionality aligns with engineering drawings and system requirements.
- Configure, test, and commissionindustrial networking devicesincluding switches, firewalls, and ICS/IT interfaces.
- Participate in commissioning activities to verify correct functionality of field instrumentation and control devices.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues related toPLC/DCS configuration, programming, or communication systems.
- Identify and document deficiencies during commissioning activities and track them through to resolution.
- Complete commissioning documentation includingcheck sheets, inspection test plans (ITPs), and commissioning reports.
- Record final system configuration and programming changes through redlines and documentation updates.
- Participate in commissioning meetings, including daily toolbox talks, safety briefings, and job hazard assessments.
- Support development of detailed commissioning and execution plans.
- Monitor work progress and collaborate with project teams to resolve schedule or technical barriers.
Requirements
- Extensive PLC programming experience (Schneider PLCs, Control Expert/Unity Pro preferred)
- Extensive DCS configuration and programming experience with industrial distributed control systems
- Experience configuring and integrating control system historians and plant data systems
- Strong understanding of industrial instrumentation and control systems
- Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols, including Modbus TCP/IP, HART, and OPC communications
- Extensive experience configuring and supporting industrial networking infrastructure (switches, firewalls, ICS/IT integration)
- Strong understanding of industrial cybersecurity best practices
- Experience administering Windows Server environments and creating/maintaining Virtual Machines in Hyper-V (preferred)
- Ability to work safely in industrial environments and follow site safety procedures
- Completion of site pre-access requirements including safety orientation and substance testing
- Strong computer and technical troubleshooting skills
- Engineering technologist certification or related technical diploma (preferred)
- Experience supporting commissioning and start-up of large industrial facilities (preferred)
