About the role

ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking passionate Educational Assistants (EA) who are organized and looking for an enriching experience to be part of the new school team. The Educational Assistants will assist students who demonstrate significant academic delays and who require additional academic focus in literacy and numeracy interventions. The EA’s work with individual or small groups of students on literacy, numeracy, and English language learner programs. This is a full-time position reporting directly to the designated teacher and to the Principal of Elsie Fabian School.

KEY RESPONSIBITIES
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Follow research-based approaches as directed for literacy, numeracy, and/or ELL intervention(s).

  • Adhere to the guidelines set out within reading programs (Fountas and Pinnell, Jolly Phonics, etc) and evaluate effectiveness of strategies being used.

  • Follow any IPP/ISP strategies as directed by the teacher and Classroom Support Teacher.

  • Implement the reading intervention programming with minimal supervision.

  • Communicate the reading level of students and give strategies for reading, writing, and word decoding to students and parents.

  • Schedule weekly meetings with the teacher to communicate intervention plans and successes of individual students.

  • Plan daily reading, writing or numeracy activities under the direction of the teacher or CST.

  • Prepare and modify materials to meet the individual needs of the students.

  • Organize and prepare program materials, games, supplies, and wall displays.

  • Work with computer programs to assist literacy, numeracy, and/or spoken English development.

  • Assist with pre-teaching concepts from the curriculum.

  • Implement ELL approaches that may include vocabulary development, speaking English, reading and writing development.

  • Implement daily record keeping for student literacy, numeracy, or ELL portfolio.

  • Complete term progress checklists with the teacher.

  • Complete performance records of reading including reading fluency, word recognition checklist, reading comprehension questions, auditory processing, spelling word lists, and other informal tests as required by teacher.

  • Provide supports for ELL learners to promote vocabulary, oral comprehension, and the ability to communicate in English.

  • Prepare individual materials to teach literacy and numeracy concepts to mastery levels.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Educational Assistant Certificate or Equivalent is required

  • Related degree or diploma is considered an asset

  • Previous related experience is required

  • Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is a definite asset

  • Clean Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required

  • Valid class 5 Driver’s License & Clean Driver’s Abstract required

  • Successful candidate will be required to live in (or relocate to) Fort McMurray, Alberta
