Role: Millwright & Glulam Line Technician

Location: Nelson, BC

Role Overview

The Millwright & Glulam Line Technician is a hybrid technical role responsible for both the mechanical reliability and operational performance of the new glulam production line.

During the installation and commissioning phase, this role plays a lead hands-on role in equipment setup, alignment, and startup of key systems including the sorting line, finger jointing line, planer, and material handling systems.

Following commissioning, the role transitions into a dual-function position, combining millwright responsibilities (preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and mechanical improvements) with active operation of production equipment. The successful candidate will support plant uptime while contributing directly to throughput, quality, and continuous improvement on the line.

This role is best suited to a highly practical, mechanically strong individual who is comfortable moving between trades work and production operation in a dynamic manufacturing environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Installation & Commissioning (Initial Phase)

  • Assist with installation, alignment, and setup of glulam production equipment

  • Support commissioning of:

  • Sorting Line

  • Finger jointing system

  • Lamella planer

  • Material handling systems

  • Troubleshoot startup issues in collaboration with installer team, engineers, and internal teams

  • Perform mechanical adjustments to achieve required tolerances, alignment, and performance

  • Support testing, calibration, and early-stage process stabilization

Mechanical Maintenance & Reliability

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical issues across production equipment including planers, conveyors, presses, and finger jointing systems
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks: lubrication, inspection, minor adjustments
  • Ensure proper alignment of shafts, rollers, bearings, and drive systems
  • Perform welding and light fabrication (guards, brackets, supports, repairs)
  • Coordinate with external vendors or additional maintenance resources when required
  • Respond to breakdowns and support rapid recovery of production

Production Operation & Line Support

  • Operate production equipment during assigned shifts, while providing additional coverage during operator absences, bottlenecks, or high-demand periods
  • Support machine setup, changeovers, and parameter adjustments
  • Use mechanical knowledge to optimize machine performance, reduce downtime, and improve consistency
  • Work closely with other line technicians to ensure smooth material flow and stable operation

Process Improvement & Optimization

  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, changeover efficiency, material yield, throughput
  • Support implementation of mechanical or process improvements
  • Contribute to troubleshooting recurring production or quality issues
  • Participate in continuous improvement

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow and enforce all safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout
  • Ensure all guards, emergency stops, and safety systems are functional
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Promote a strong safety culture across both maintenance and production activities

Documentation & Communication

  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair logs
  • Document recurring issues and corrective actions
  • Communicate clearly with production, quality, and management teams
  • Provide input on spare parts, tooling, and equipment upgrades

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Attributes

  • Certified Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) – Red Seal or provincial equivalent

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in an industrial, manufacturing, preferably in wood processing or automated production lines

  • Strong hands-on experience with:

  • Mechanical systems (hydraulics, bearings, drives, conveyors, alignment)

  • Welding and light fabrication

  • Equipment installation and commissioning

  • Experience operating or supporting production machinery is strongly preferred

  • Comfortable working in both maintenance and production roles as required

  • Familiarity with glulam or timber processing equipment is a strong asset

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and mechanical specifications

  • Knowledge of safety regulations and workplace procedures in a heavy industrial setting

  • Experience supervising and training employees

  • Fall protection and confined space certification preferred

Schedule and Working Conditions

  • Ability to work 7:30-5:15, Monday – Thursday, with a 15-minute paid coffee break and a 30-minute unpaid lunch each day, and every second Friday from 7:30-4:00
  • Ability to work on-site at Spearhead headquarters
  • On-call availability for emergency equipment repairs outside regular hours
  • Manual dexterity to operate machines and hand tools on a regular basis
  • Ability to stand and move around the shops for work shifts
  • Ability to work in a workshop with exposure to dust, chemicals, and noise using required PPE
  • Ability to move and carry materials up to 30 lbs on a regular basis
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally on an occasional basis to meet machine suppliers

  • Pay range is $80k-$100k commensurate with experience and qualifications

The Spearhead manufacturing facility is located on the west arm of Kootenay Lake in the Southern Interior of British Columbia. The 40,000 sq.ft. facility houses full-service millwork and timberframe shops featuring CNC manufacturing and timber milling equipment along with design and administration offices.

All projects are developed using BIM software to achieve fabrication-level digital models which interface directly with CNC machinery. This information is shared with project partners to review connections and coordinate site-built and prefabricated components.

Wherever possible, structural and architectural components are designed, engineered, and pre-manufactured parallel with site construction, allowing for just-in-time delivery and compressed construction schedules. Keeping the production process in a controlled environment at our facility greatly enhances quality, enables cost control and promotes manufacturing efficiency.
