Purpose The Senior Medical Director, Medical Affairs has responsibility for the Oncology team and all relevant products within solid tumor oncology. Team leader for Medical Directors, Medical Education, Medical Communication and Field teams.

You Will Be Responsible For

  • Oversees the team responsible for the development of medical strategies supporting all assets within Oncology and the execution of those strategies from both head office and within the field including the IEGP (Integrated Evidence Generation Plan), the medical education and MSL field execution plans ensuring the safe and effective use of Johnson & Johnson products.
  • Lead the medical sciences vision and strategy for Solid Tumor Oncology, and positioning Medical Affairs as a core pillar in the Johnson & Johnson organization.
  • Member of the MALT (Medical Affairs Leadership Team) — the most senior group responsible for setting the strategic vision for medical affairs and governing the function. Enhance connectivity, best practice sharing and facilitate effective partnerships with regional, global and organizations as a member of the Global Medical Affairs Teams (GMAT).
  • Lead the development and delivery of the Medical Affairs (MA) strategic plan for early assets in the portfolio (long term strategy) and accountable for the development of strategic plan for all assets within the therapeutic area (TA), ensuring adequate resourcing, in alignment with patient needs, and business priorities.
  • Position Johnson & Johnson as a talent leader by attracting, developing and managing core talent to build an organization that is responsive and proactive in building capabilities for the future to create a diverse, high performing medical organization. Build a broader talent pipeline for the future needs of the global medical affairs organization.
  • Ensures all individuals, strategies and processes are in compliance with all relevant guidelines and regulations.
  • Guide the development and implementation of the Integrated evidence generation plans (IEGP) by the Medical Directors and, including medical assessment and approval of clinical study protocols on a local level. Ensuring innovation readiness and market preparation from clinical site initiation through to regulatory approval.
  • Represent Canada and assure TA presence at the Global Medical Affairs forums in all Medical matters and shape and influence global strategies, plans and tactics to ensure they reflect the needs of the Canadian market.
  • Represents the company as a key clinical/scientific expert in front of leading medical experts, professional associations and institutions in their therapeutic area. Interacts closely with commercial and market access counterparts on the disease area leadership level.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Advanced scientific degree required; MD, PhD, PharmD strongly preferred
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and/or healthcare environment required
  • Demonstrated track record of success within Medical Affairs and/or clinical development function preferred
  • Preferred background in related therapeutic areas: Solid Tumor Oncology required; experience in lung, head and neck, prostate and/or bladder highly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with direct people leadership required; experience leading other people leaders highly desired
  • Demonstrated strong business acumen and understanding of market dynamics and value drivers
  • Highly innovative with the ability to drive in a complex and changing environment
  • Demonstrated strong strategic & influencing skills with highly collaborative instincts
  • Experience establishing & engaging medical expert/opinion leader networks
  • Experience in patient advocacy and engagement
  • Experience in a multi-functional matrix organization
  • Strong stakeholder management, cross functional partnership, interpersonal communication and team building skills
  • Travel estimated to be 15-20% of time both internationally and in market
  • This position is located at the 19 Green Belt Drive Toronto home office and follows a hybrid schedule of three days in the office and two days remotely per week
