About the role
Location: Village Commons, 610 8 Ave SE Wage: $17 - $26.55 per hour
Hours per week: Approximately 25 hours per week; hours may vary based on business needs
The Facility Caretaker is a vital member of the Village Commons team, responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for staff, partners, and community members. This role requires initiative, pride of ownership, and a respectful, service-oriented presence, helping ensure the facility remains fully operational and continues to serve as a reliable, inclusive community hub.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Cleaning & Sanitation

Maintain cleaning schedules and complete daily, routine, and seasonal cleaning tasks
-
Clean and disinfect all areas, including washrooms, kitchens, offices, floors, windows, and high-touch surfaces
-
Restock washroom, kitchen, and cleaning supplies; manage garbage, recycling, and end-of-day cleanups
-
Complete checklists, logs, incident reports, and perform basic preventive maintenance
Facility & Event Support
-
Support Supervisors and Management with day-to-day facility operations
-
Act as a point of contact for contractors and service providers
-
Manage inventory of cleaning and washroom supplies
-
Assist with room setups and teardowns, including moving tables and chairs
Maintenance & Repairs
-
Identify, log, and report maintenance or repair needs
Perform minor repairs and general maintenance (e.g., painting, patching drywall, changing light bulbs, hanging signage)
Health, Safety & Security
-
Follow WHMIS, OHS, and internal health and safety policies
-
Conduct walkthroughs, security checks, and open/close the building as required
-
Respond promptly to spills, hazards, and safety concerns
-
Maintain communication with Community Hub Support Workers via radio
-
Support a safe, accessible, and welcoming environment, including de-escalation when appropriate
-
Provide general operational support to staff as needed
WHAT YOU BRING
-
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a custodial, facilities, or similar role, or demonstrated transferable experience from another position.
-
Training or certifications related to custodial, facilities, or maintenance work are an asset but not required.
-
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and strong time-management skills to meet schedules and deadlines.
-
Proven ability to plan, prioritize, and manage tasks to maintain a clean, safe, and functional facility.

Knowledge of appropriate cleaning equipment, products, and chemicals for various applications
-
Familiarity with tools, methods, and best practices for minor repairs and general maintenance.
-
Physically capable of lifting and moving heavy items, including supplies, garbage, tables, and chairs.
-
Strong interpersonal and communication skills when working with staff, contractors, and community members.
-
Sound judgment, including understanding personal limitations and recognizing when additional support or expertise is required.

Flexibility to work variable hours, including evenings or weekends, to support facility rentals.

Reasonable level of technological literacy, including the ability to manage a shared email inbox and complete required cybersecurity training.
