About the role

Do you have a heart for supporting individuals in the New Westminster community? Are you comfortable in a front-facing role that combines compassion, structure, and service within a Christian organization?

We are seeking a Resource Navigator to join our team. In this role, you will build meaningful relationships with community members, assess individual needs, and connect individuals to essential resources, including housing, shelter, stabilization, and recovery services. Through a Christ-centred approach, you will walk alongside people with empathy, dignity, and respect as they navigate complex challenges.

This is a temporary, full-time position until March 1, 2027 , working Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a starting hourly wage of $26.26 to $28.70.

You'll frequently engage with clients facing crisis situations stemming from various challenges. Support from fellow staff members will be readily available as needed.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Model Christ in word and

  • 35% - Provide direct support to community members to ensure their successful access to UGM services. This includes:

  • Providing recommendations, referrals, and assistance to internal and external services including detox, addiction recovery programs, shelter, and other support services.

  • Coordination of appointments, and warm handoffs when appropriate,

  • Screening and collecting relevant information.

  • Provide person-centered support to assist community members with their needs.

  • Build trusting relationships to increase their motivation and confidence for change.

  • 25% - Liaise and build strong relationships with other UGM departments and service agencies in the area. This includes visiting agencies, raising awareness of the Resource Navigator role, and proactively researching and reaching out to other service providers.

  • 15% - Plan specific resource clinics and activities for community members under the direction of Supervisor.

  • 15% - Maintain accurate records, including resource lists, case notes, and confidential information of community members for future reference on ShareVision software.

  • 10% - Participate in staff meetings, training, and spiritual development opportunities, in particular to provide support, training, and coordination for new staff and volunteers.

  • 10% Maintain the centre and office space in a clean and presentable condition.

  • 10% - Monitor the age, sobriety, and gender of guests coming into the centre where Maintain daily security, e.g., secure all gates and doors when no events are occurring.

  • 10% - Perform other duties as required by your Supervisor, including covering the reception and promoting awareness of the needs and challenges of community members.

  • Adhere to all UGM-published policies, practices, and procedures, including Occupational Health and Safety.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Mature individual, committed to and in agreement with Union Gospel Mission’s Mission Statement, Core Values, and Statement of Faith.
  • Vibrant and growing relationship with the Creator Jesus our Lord and Savior.
  • Understanding of the importance of a high level of confidentiality within the organization and its clientele.
  • Advanced computer skills (Excel, Word, and Outlook). Experience using database applications is an asset.
  • 1 year of related work experience is required, and a willingness to work with vulnerable peoples who face complex barriers in the streets of their community.
  • Related post-secondary education preferred.
  • Consideration may be given to alternate combinations of lived experience and education.
  • Ability to set appropriate and safe boundaries with demanding individuals and deal with individuals in crisis and/or psychosis in an appropriate manner.
  • Professional presentation and demeanor with a friendly, approachable personality and strong person-centered service skills.
  • Experience working in a community organization, foundation or ministry
  • Experience with Indigenous clients; working in a multi-ethnic and socially diverse community is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Valid Class 5 drivers’ license required or willingness to take transit with UGM community members if necessary.
  • Ability to work independently under the direction of a Supervisor.
  • Identify and solve problems and follow through on initiatives.
  • Strict attention to detail.
  • Proven track record of punctuality and contribution to a health team environment.
  • Complete UGM Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Course.
  • Complete UGM Outreach Worker Orientation Course.
  • Technical Competency—Trauma-Informed Care (Level 2): Help identify negative events that have impacted the client’s functioning, and develop interventions that emphasize safety, choice, and personal control.

Working Conditions

  • Work Location

Work is generally performed indoors, with up to 10% of the time spent outdoors in all types of

weather.

  • Physical Requirements

Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require standing, walking or reaching for up to 60% of

the time. The employee is required to look at a computer screen and use a keyboard for up to 30% of the

time. Must be able to lift up to 35lbs occasionally.

  • Work Conditions

The working environment is generally favourable. Lighting and temperature are adequate. Work is

performed amid normal conditions of dust, odours, fumes, and noises. Occasional environmental

exposures to cold, heat, and water. This position requires working in an environment that often deals

with community members in crisis situations brought about by diverse problems. The ability to

function independently and frequently under pressure, while managing multiple concurrent tasks

including emergency situations is an ongoing expectation of this position.

  • Hours of Work

Shifts may include day, afternoon, evening, and weekends. Work on statutory holidays may be

required. Moderate overtime may be required. Covering the reception essential service staffing post

during critical staffing moments is mandatory during the hours of 7 am to 11 pm

  • Hazards

Job requires frequent interaction with the public some of whom may be upset, abusive, and/or

violent. Job requires working frequently with people in unhealthy conditions and may include

exposure to bodily fluids, lice and bedbugs. Employee is required to hear information about

community members’ lives which

which may be troubling or upsetting and may cause emotional issues including vicarious trauma.

Due to the nature of the job, and our commitment to a safe environment, the candidate is subject to a criminal record check and must submit a current Driver’s Abstract.
