Location: Montreal, QC.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Compounding Services, the Compounding Specialist – Formulation Development and Support focuses primarily on fulfilling customized formula requests for a wide range of compounded preparations, as well as serving as a technical resource for both internal teams and external clients.

Responsibilities & Duties:

Formula Development & Review

  • Apply pharmaceutical principles to design customized formulas for a wide range of non-sterile and sterile dosage forms for both humans and animals.
  • Develop formulas for dosage forms including, but not limited to:
  • Oral: liquids, tablets, capsules, troches, gummies
  • Topical: creams, gels, ointments
  • Suppositories: rectal and vaginal
  • Ophthalmic/Otic: drops and ointments
  • Nasal: sprays and ointments
  • Injectables: intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous
  • Create detailed Ingredient Sheets outlining the properties (ex: solubility data, sensitivities, interactions) for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients and Excipients used in the formulas.
  • Perform accurate calculations to determine the quantities of each ingredient required to create formula.
  • Gather clinical literature to support the stability, safety and efficacy of the customized formula.
  • Verify chemical compatibilities, reason and rationale for compounding, therapeutics and potential patent considerations.
  • Use pharmaceutical resources to build the formula worksheet, which includes the step-by-step procedure, ingredient-specific sensitivities and interactions, auxiliary labels, BUD information, references and more.
  • Collaborate with the approving pharmacist throughout the formula approval process and ensure final formula accuracy.
  • Consult with Legal, Regulatory, QC and R&D Teams for any further formula related verifications.

Compounding troubleshooting and Validation of Customer Complaints

  • Work with QC and R&D teams to investigate, validate, or resolve customer complaints related to compounded preparations.
  • Support troubleshooting activities to ensure formulation accuracy, quality, and performance.

Technical Support & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as a technical resource for internal stakeholders and external clients by providing expert guidance on formulation and compounding inquiries.
  • Participate in priority projects and cross-functional initiatives related to formula creation and process enhancement.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a science related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in formulation development (drug development). Experience in pharmacy compounding an asset.
  • Knowledge of regulations and guidelines of the following is considered an asset: USP, NAPRA, APF, FDA, Health Canada, TGA, State and Provincial boards.
  • Strong customer-service orientation with exceptional listening and communication skills.
  • Proven abilities to apply good judgement, ethical practice and decision-making skills.
  • Detail oriented, ability to apply analytical thinking and effective problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Advanced mathematical skills and technical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills; fluent in English and French (oral & written). English is required as we service US and Canadian clients.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook and Excel) required.
