Job Profile

The City of Cambridge is looking for qualified Head Instructor Guards to join our team for Summer 2026.

What you will be doing

  • Safe and effective supervision of the pool and area during fitness and recreational swims.
  • Is directly accountable for the activities and programs at the assigned pool and ensures all staff are performing the duties outlined in their job description.
  • Provides ongoing staff development including continuous support and feedback on job performance and personal and professional goal-setting, as well as administering formal and informal performance appraisals.
  • Instruction of swim classes as required and assist with classes in water as needed.
  • Provide feedback to members on participants’ progress when requested.
  • Complete progress cards and worksheets at the end of each instructional series.
  • Keep records of participants’ progress and attendance throughout a series of lessons.
  • Screening of participants in classes and moving to a more appropriate level if necessary.
  • Is actively involved in programming taking place in the facility, including but not limited to lessons and recreational swims.
  • Follows safety supervision basics and ensures the safety of program participants. Practices a preventative approach to safety, makes rescues, and administers first aid when necessary, including completing proper documentation.
  • Report accidents and incidents to management and follow up when necessary.
  • Interacts with parents/guardians on the activities and development of students' swim skills. Acts as a City of Cambridge "Ambassador" to ensure parental satisfaction.
  • Attends all mandatory pre-season and mid-season training dates and in-service sessions, which may take place occasionally beyond regular working hours.
  • Checks facility, equipment, and supplies daily, performs required pool testing, performs morning and evening maintenance checks, and completes log sheets accordingly.
  • Accountable for opening and closing procedures at the assigned facility and aassisting outdoor pool cashiers with their opening, closing and daily tasks.
  • Practicing strong interpersonal skills.
  • Complete an "end of shift report" daily which provides a summary of events during each shift (incidents, pool closures, etc.) Answer telephone/provide information to members re: programs, schedule, and special events.
  • Administrative functions such as recommending aquatic policies and procedures, reporting lesson statistics, confirming shifts/hours of work and developing core lesson plans.

Experience and Knowledge

Two years' experience in aquatics and supervisor of staff and/or facilities.

National Lifeguard - Pool

Lifesaving and/or Swim Instructor Certificate

Standard First Aid with CPR C and AED

Aquatic Supervisor Training

High Five - QUEST 2

Lifesaving Society Pool Operator - Level 1 or equivalent

We will ask you for these items if you are hired

Current and valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check to be provided prior to commencement in this position.

Proof of your current and valid certificate(s) and/or educational qualifications.

Supervisor Health & Safety Awareness Training Certificate from the Ministry of Labour

High Five-PHCD Certificate, Standard First Aid, CPR C AED Certificate, High Five Quest 2, National Lifeguard – Pool, Lifesaving Society and/or Swim Instructor Certificate, Aquatic Supervisor Training.

Your Lifesaving Society ID number.

Rate of pay

The hourly rate of pay for this position is $23.37.

Hours of work

  • Aquatic positions are available from June 1 – September 7, 2026.
  • Up to 40 hours/week. Hours will include evenings, weekdays or weekends and are dependent on the number of participants taking part in our programs; as such, there are no minimum hours associated with this position.
  • The hiring criteria for summer session employment does not allow for vacation time. It is understood that you will be available for work during the entire summer program period.
