We are looking for a Operations Manager - Chemistry in 6660 Campobello Road, Mississauga, ON L5N 2L8 CAN. Your mission will be to:
The Chemistry Lab Manager – Operations is responsible for leading and overseeing day-to-day activities in the wet chemistry, food preparation, and instrumental analysis sections of the laboratory. This role ensures that all testing activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with Mérieux NutriSciences’ quality standards, client requirements, and regulatory guidelines (ISO 17025, CFIA, FDA, etc.).
The manager provides operational leadership to a team of supervisors, chemists, and technicians, ensuring consistent performance, accurate results, and on-time delivery. This role drives continuous improvement in laboratory processes, resource utilization, and staff development to support business growth and client satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Oversee daily operations in wet chemistry, food preparation, and instrumental sections (e.g., GC, HPLC, ICP, spectroscopy).
- Plan and coordinate workloads to ensure timely and accurate completion of client analyses.
- Ensure all testing activities meet quality, safety, and productivity targets.
- Monitor and optimize laboratory workflows, identifying opportunities for efficiency improvements and cost control.
Technical Oversight
- Maintain expertise in wet chemistry and instrumental analytical methods for food and environmental samples.
- Oversee method validation, verification, and instrument calibration in collaboration with Quality Assurance and Technical Specialists.
- Ensure laboratory practices align with ISO 17025 and internal SOPs.
- Support troubleshooting of analytical issues and ensure corrective actions are implemented effectively.
People & Resource Management
- Supervise, coach, and develop team leads, chemists, and technicians; conduct performance reviews and training plans.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels, scheduling, and cross-training to meet fluctuating workloads.
- Foster a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with HR and leadership to support recruitment and retention initiatives.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with ISO 17025, GLP, and Mérieux NutriSciences quality policies.
- Maintain documentation, records, and audit readiness at all times.
- Support internal and external audits, client inspections, and corrective action responses.
- Promote adherence to health, safety, and environmental policies and regulations.
Instrument & Inventory Management
- Oversee preventive maintenance, service, and performance verification for analytical instruments.
- Manage laboratory inventory, including chemicals, reagents, and consumables, ensuring supply continuity and cost efficiency.
- Coordinate with procurement and facilities to support equipment upgrades and calibration schedules.
- Continuous Improvement & Communication
- Develop and track operational KPIs (e.g., turnaround time, error rates, instrument uptime).
- Implement process improvement initiatives to enhance throughput and accuracy.
- Communicate performance metrics and operational updates to senior management.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Microbiology, QA, and Client Services teams to support integrated operations.
YOUR PROFILE
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Food Science, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5–7 years of analytical laboratory experience in food or environmental chemistry, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
- Strong background in wet chemistry techniques and instrumental analysis (e.g., HPLC, GC, ICP-OES, spectrophotometry).
- Experience in ISO 17025–accredited laboratories preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Proven ability to lead diverse technical teams in a high-throughput testing environment.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with LIMS and data integrity systems.
- Commitment to continuous improvement, quality, and safety.
Work Environment:
The incumbent works in a laboratory setting with lighting and temperature control. Working in the laboratory is necessary when evaluating the tasks of the subordinates and explaining new techniques. Occasionally, fumes require the incumbent to wear safety equipment that includes a mask or working under a ventilation hood. The incumbent can expect extended time spent in a standing position. The incumbent should be able to detect slight variation in shades of colors. Client visits may require protective clothing and equipment according to the facility environment. Overnight travel is less than two nights a month to attend meetings and professional seminars.
Compensation Range:
90,000 - 100,000 CAD per year
Potential bonus: Up to 10% based on performance.
