Research Assistant, Reading and Math Achievement in the Early School Years
About the role
Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.
Position Overview:
The Research Assistant will work with Dr. Amy Desroches and her collaborators to assist with research studies investigating language processing in children and adults. Ongoing studies look at developmental and bilingual populations.
Duties:
- Working closely with other lab members (Dr. Desroches, students, and collaborators) to perform the following tasks: data collection, data entry, analyses, and interpretation of the results.
- Prepare literature reviews, results, and materials for publication.
- Assist with preparing the materials for data collection such as developing stimuli and programming tasks, distributing fliers and digital recruitment posters.
- Perform routine clerical and administrative duties to support research activities.
- Help prepare research posters, slides for talks, and other materials to disseminate research findings.
Qualifications:
- Completion of Bachelor’s (Honours) degree in Psychology or be a senior student enrolled in the PSYC-4040 Honour’s thesis class from the University of Winnipeg.
- Completion of PSYC-4100 Research Design and Data Analysis (or equivalent) with a minimum grade of B.
- Completion of PSYCH-4910 Special Topics in Cognitive Neuroscience and PSYCH-3920 Cognitive Neuroscience is preferred.
- Completion of PSYC-4630 Topics in Cognitive Psychology (Brain and Language) is preferred.
- Experience using the Microsoft suite of programs.
- Experience using SPSS and/or R statistical program.
- Experience using online and lab based data collection platforms (e.g., Qualtrics, e-prime).
- Excellent verbal communication and writing skills.
- Experience working with children, with experience collecting standardized test data if possible.
- Excellent organization and teamwork skills.
- Experience with EEG/ERP data collection would be an asset.
- Must have reliable transportation from UW to schools in the community.
- Must be able to work between hours of 8:30am-4:30pm M-F.
- Must be able to work up to 35 hours per week during peak times for data collection (March, May), while hours outside of peak times will be limited.
- Must be able to obtain clear criminal background and child abuse registry checks.
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from February 17, 2026 - June 30, 2026 and the estimated total hours of work will be 200-300 hours.
