AltaGas - Manager, Indigenous & Community Relations
Reporting to the Director, Indigenous and Community Relations, we’re seeking an energetic and authentic leader to advance Indigenous excellence across AltaGas! This is a key leadership role within the Indigenous Relations Centre of Excellence, serving as the subject matter lead for all Indigenous Relations (IR) matters and driving enterprise-wide alignment on IR strategy, engagement, and implementation.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing and executing strategic IR engagement plans, leading negotiations, and fostering meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities. This role also supports communications and integrates non-technical risks into project development opportunities. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong relationship-building, communication, and strategic planning skills, capable of influencing diverse audiences and navigating complex issues.
This position is based in Calgary, with regular travel required to support projects and relationship-building across regions.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Serve as the subject matter lead for all Indigenous Relations matters across the enterprise.
- Develop and implement IR engagement plans aligned with AltaGas’ enterprise-wide IR strategy.
- Lead the development of AltaGas’ value proposition and source materials for impacted Indigenous communities.
- Advance strategic Indigenous partnerships using internal business processes and cross-functional collaboration.
- Lead in the development and execution of lifecycle engagement plans, tracking and managing scorecards on implementation commitments.
- Act as lead negotiator on agreements with Indigenous communities, ensuring alignment with corporate values and commitments.
- Develop and support a project delivery model that integrates risks and opportunities into project planning and execution.
- Promote and facilitate Indigenous participation in AltaGas’ Supply Chain Management (SCM) processes, serving as procurement lead for Indigenous inclusion.
- Partner with regional leads to address complex or sensitive issues collaboratively and constructively.
- Build and sustain positive relationships with Indigenous groups, community leaders, environmental organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Represent AltaGas in industry, government, and community forums, advocating for meaningful engagement and inclusion.
- Coordinate company participation in key events and recommend community investment opportunities.
- Provide leadership and innovation for the continuous enhancement of the Indigenous Relations Program.
- Mentor and support a high-performing team of professionals, fostering innovation and excellence in Indigenous Relations.
- Support the coordination and delivery of AltaGas’ Community Partnership Programs, including Indigenous Workforce, Community Investment, and Rail Safety initiatives.
- Prepare reports, scorecards, and briefing notes for senior leadership, providing strategic insights and recommendations.
- Support regulatory filings and ensure compliance with provincial, federal, and local requirements related to Indigenous engagement.
- Monitor and report on Indigenous and community issues that could impact AltaGas’ operations or reputation.
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor's Degree in policy, law, public relations, marketing, communications, or journalism or the equivalent preferred
- 7+ years experience in government, industry, policy, media relations, public relations or stakeholder relations or the equivalent required
- Experience with/knowledge of regulatory requirements governing the development and operation of AltaGas’ activities in the areas of geographical assignment
- Experience and existing relationships with community members and elected officials in Canada
- Excellent communication skills (active listening, public speaking, verbal, written), along with ability to interface with internal and external parties
- Experience in and familiarity with the energy sector
- Proficient use of MS Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, Publisher, Word)
- Proactively develops and maintains strong working relationships with Indigenous, community, industry, and key government contacts
- Grows trust in and expands the long-term relationships established by AltaGas
- Proven track record in advancing strategic Indigenous partnerships
- Demonstrates flexibility and an ability to respond easily to shifting priorities
- Operates with a high level of integrity, confidentially, and accountability
- Ability to work independently in an entrepreneurial environment, as well as ability to work as part of a team
- Manages projects and activities from conception to completion, with limited oversight
- Able to work to tight timeframes and is highly organized
- Eligible to lobby at both Provincial and Federal levels in Canada
