JOB SUMMARY

UBC Facilities provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia. The Municipal Services group is responsible for providing waste management services, soft and hard landscape services, as well as moving and general labour services for all of the Vancouver campus.

This 8 month position will spend half their time with the Street Operations crew and the other half with the Landscape Crew.

The Street Operations crew is engaged in the ongoing hard landscape maintenance (e.g. roads, sidewalks, storm drains, water features, street furnishing). The Sessional Labourer performs physical work, operates specialized equipment, performs maintenance work in the Street Operations crew; working within relevant safety regulations and in the safest, simplest, sustainable and most efficient manner.

The Landscape crew is engaged in the care, ongoing maintenance and periodic renewal of gardens, lawns, shrub beds, and trees of 172 hectares of core campus grounds. The Sessional Labourer performs physical work, operates specialized equipment, and performs maintenance work in the landscape crew; working within relevant safety regulations and in the safest, simplest, sustainable and most efficient manner.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

Sessional Labourer within the Municipal Services Unit of Facilities. Reports to the Head Labourer or Head Landscape Technologist in all service areas in the unit.

WORK PERFORMED

Assists with the maintenance of both soft and hard landscapes and other general labour duties using specialized equipment and physical effort including lawn and garden bed maintenance and development. Performs tasks of general nature involving physical effort. Engaged in the construction and maintenance of structures, pipelines and drainage systems. General duties related to landscaping, campus cleanup, road repair and other tasks not requiring specialized skills.

Operates light, medium and heavy vehicles and special construction and maintenance equipment (including, but not limited to, power washers, line trimmers, lawn mowers, backpack blowers, jack hammers, tampers, concrete vibrators, concrete/asphalt coring and cutting equipment, sandblasting equipment, bobcats, and any other special equipment.

May monitor the work of a group of Labourers in an assigned area as designated by the Head Labourer, Sub-Head Labourer, Head Landscape Technologist, or Sub-Head Landscape Technologist; participates in the work and ensures those under his/her jurisdiction work in a correct and safe manner.

Takes all required training to perform the job safely and is to be familiar with safety.

Requests and receives tools, equipment and material for the work assigned

Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR

Determines the most efficient and effective way to operate equipment to perform work; incorrect decisions result in minor delays.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The Sessional Labourer reports to the Manager, Municipal Services and receives daily work assignments and directions from Head Labourer, Sub-Head Labourer, Head Landscape Technologist, or Sub-Head Landscape Technologist. The Sessional Labourer works from oral and written instructions and according to established departmental policies and procedures.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

Monitors the work of a group of labourers in an assigned area as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School graduation and Valid B.C. Driver's License. Class 5 B.C. Driver's License preferred. the equivalent combination of education and experience. Good physical fitness; knowledge of construction and maintenance equipment and usage. This position will be required to work 37.5 hours per week.
