Job Summary
The Vice President Research and Innovation (VPRI) portfolio includes the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation (OVPRI), Strategic Research Initiatives (SRI) Unit, Office of Research Services, Animal Care Services, Research Partnerships and Knowledge Mobilization Unit, and responsibility for the University of Victoria (UVic) research centres, institutes and entities. The OVPRI provides guidance for UVic’s research agenda at the institutional level, including setting strategic research priorities and leading key initiatives to ensure that UVic research continues to grow and prosper.
The Strategic Research Initiatives (SRI) unit provides strategic research planning and coordination that builds on existing and emerging research strengths, creates new research opportunities for faculty, staff and students, and advances institutional research related goals across the Research and Creative Works Strategy and the university Strategic Plan, including nurturing a culture of excellence in research, scholarship, and creative endeavors and enhancing the university’s research profile and reputation nationally and internationally.
External research award opportunities are pursued at the local, national, and international level to increase UVic’s impact and reputation as a leading, innovative, research-intensive university. This process includes identifying prestigious external academic and non-academic award programs and suitable UVic nominees and nominators for the awards.
Mandate: The Awards Facilitator identifies, promotes and consults on external award programs and opportunities, encouraging participation, and supporting the identification and nomination of faculty and staff. They are responsible for UVic’s annual internal research awards nomination process and serves as the secretariat of the President’s Advisory Committee on External Awards and Honours.
Objectives:
- Increase UVic’s annual volume and quality of external award nominations by proactively identifying strong nominees, conducting targeted outreach to faculties, and producing complete, competitive nomination packages for major national and international awards.
- Ensure effective governance and administration of award committees and internal programs by coordinating all meetings and materials for the President’s Advisory Committee on External Awards and Honours, preparing required quarterly and annual reports, and managing the full lifecycle of the Reach Awards competition.
- Enhance the visibility and accessibility of award opportunities and recognition by maintaining an up‑to‑date awards website, delivering timely updates to the UVic Awards & Honours webpage, drafting high‑quality communications, and partnering with Communications, LTSI, and VPRI Events to promote recipients and events.
- Build institutional capacity and improve nomination quality by providing ongoing training, one‑on‑one consultations, and strategic advice to faculty, staff, and senior leaders on award criteria, nomination strategies, and best practices for preparing competitive submissions.
Job Requirements
This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree plus minimum 4 years of relevant experience. Including working:
- with external funding sources
- with diverse communities
- for a post-secondary institution or similarly large and complex public, NGO or research organization.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
- Demonstrated professional-level expertise in research, writing, and editing a range of materials for a variety of purposes and audiences.
- Proficiency in project management
- Knowledge of the post-secondary sector.
- Proven strength in written and oral communications.
- Proven ability to develop credibility and build effective, sustainable relationships with faculty, staff and other relevant stakeholders.
- Proven ability to demonstrate initiative, creativeness, resourcefulness, and discretion.
- Ability to work effectively and independently with a variety of people in a complex, decentralized work environment as an integral part of a small team.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to accuracy and detail.
- Technical skills including web publishing, collaboration and project management software (i.e. Microsoft Teams).
- Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, make decisions independently, be self-motivated, and consistently meet deadlines.
