Sr. Engineer - Telecom Transport

Position Highlights
The Protection, Control and Telecommunications Engineering Division is responsible for engineering BC Hydro’s Protection

& Control systems and Telecommunication Networks, and ensuring these systems contribute to safe and reliable operation

of BC Hydro’s electric system while meeting performance requirements of system planners, regulators customers and other

stakeholders. The division provides engineering studies, standards, specifications, design solutions, construction

documentation, and engineering oversight of work done by engineering service partners. We provide technical support

during procurement, construction, testing and commissioning, and provide asset lifecycle support with critical failure

analysis and emergency operational support for restoring customer supply in the event of forced outages. The division is

responsible for deploying and sustaining numerous regulatory bulk electric system standards, including cybersecurity

standards for Industrial Control and Telecommunication systems.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Engineer in the Telecom Transport and Network Refresh Design

team in the Telecom Network Engineering department based at the Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC. The Senior Engineer is

required to work within a multidiscipline team to design efficient and reliable Telecom Transport systems. The engineer will

coordinate design activities to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion. On certain projects, the

engineer will also perform the role of Project Engineer or Owner’s Engineer to accomplish the project mandate.

What you'll do

<Qualifications>

Working closely with other Engineering teams, the Telecom design Senior Engineer provides technical leadership and

guidance and successfully carries out the following duties:

  • As an experienced professional engineer, engages in the engineering of electrical utility telecommunication systems and

develops specialized expertise in telecom engineering, using initiative and judgement to perform tasks including developing

standards, designs, analyzing and resolve challenging and unusual engineering problems with considerable independence.

  • Manage medium and large sized projects and work packages, write specifications and standards, estimate capital costs,

coach, and mentor technical staff, and provide technical and site support during the installation and commissioning of

telecom and tele-protection equipment.

  • Provide technical assistance and construction support in the field and undertakes field reviews as required by EGBC.

Resolve site queries, attending site meetings and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.

  • Provide work leadership to a team in a lead engineer role including reporting out on work completion of the team.

  • Provide technical direction to engineers, consultants and technical support staff, coordinate projects of medium to high

complexity and plan and manage resources and develop innovative methods of design for engineering problems.

  • Review work of the project team and of consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results

and adherence to accepted engineering practice.

  • Prepare signed and sealed engineering deliverables as a Professional of Record (PoR) in accordance with EGBC and BC

Hydro design practices.

  • Maintain complete project documentation with respect to the design and construction, including all completion packages,

records, and requirements.

  • As "Owner's Engineer", review external service providers' engineering designs to ensure technical compliance to BC

Hydro Standards, good design practices and constructability requirements.

  • Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues to determine relative

priorities, assess the impact of work on others and resolve issues of concern.

  • Senior engineers are expected to provide technical leadership in the Telecom engineering fields and provide mentorship

to junior engineers and EITs.

  • Chair’s meetings to address engineering problems, attends and addresses seminars, courses, meetings, and

conferences, and prepares and delivers presentations to various audiences.

<Qualifications>
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities.

  • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British

Columbia (EGBC).

  • A minimum of 8 years of progressive and comprehensive engineering experience in the design and engineering of

telecommunications systems.

** The successful candidate shall demonstrate:

o In depth technical knowledge in the planning and deployment of point to point microwave networks including frequency

planning, link budget calculations, site selection and path survey.

o Experience in development and application of engineering standards, technical report writing, and the ability to undertake

technical design reviews.

o Strong knowledge of IP networking and MPLS technologies is desirable

o Excellent leadership, communications (verbal and written), technical writing, interpersonal, and presentation skills are

required.

o Good understanding of project and task management processes.

o Proactive in ongoing professional and personal development activities such as self-study, attendance at technical and

administrative courses and participation in technical and professional societies.

o Excellent organizational and management skills. Must be a self-starter.

  • This is a Full Time Regular position

  • This is a hybrid position located at the BC Hydro Edmonds office in Burnaby BC. The successful candidate will be required

to work from the office minimum 3 days a week, details to be discussed in the recruitment process.

  • Applicants who do not meet full qualifications or those with lesser work experience may be considered for a lower-level

position.

  • Will be required to occasionally travel to different areas of the province. A condition of employment for this job is that you

maintain your Class 5 Driver's License In good standing.

Standing

  • This role is safety sensitive and pre-qualification alcohol and drug testing will be required as a pre-condition to
