As the Manager, Public Affairs/Media Relations Unit (PAMRU), you will offer strategic communications advice and consultation to internal client departments within the Calgary Police Services (CPS). You will also ensure all members of PAMRU provide critical communications counsel to achieve the overall objectives of the Service. Primary duties include:

  • Provide direct leadership to a diverse team of civilian and sworn professionals coordinating, triaging and managing workflow ensuring alignment with service objectives.
  • Supervise the performance and personal development of members of PAMRU.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of internal and external communication strategies that align with overall Service objectives.
  • Lead and coordinate issues and crisis communication strategies.
  • Provide strategic communications counsel to senior members of the Service.
  • Oversee the official CPS social media accounts to align with the strategic objectives of PAMRU.
  • Direct, manage and supervise the coordination of media relations, including ongoing interaction with local, national and international media outlets.
  • Counsel and coach spokespersons, develop key messages and collateral materials as well as manage the preparation and execution of several public education initiatives.

Working Conditions: You will have regular exposure to graphic content contained in police files and may encounter aggressive behaviour while performing social media duties. In addition, you will be embedded with the crisis communications team. The position may require working outside of standard business hours in response to an incident or issue.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Journalism, Communications or Marketing and a minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in supervision, strategic communication planning including public service or media-related experience managing issues of a sensitive and confidential nature.
  • This position also requires a minimum of 5 years of project management experience and a minimum of 1 year of Organizational Change Management, which may run concurrent to the experience previously stated.
  • Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.
  • Accredited in Public Relations (APR), Accredited Business Communicator (ABC), Communications and Advertising Accredited Professional (CAAP), Certified Campaign Planning Program (CCPP), Memberships in International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) designation is considered an asset.
  • Success in this position requires emotional intelligence; creating and sustaining safe, respectful and inclusive workplaces; promoting supportive, balanced and professional accountability; building and maintaining relationships; developing self and others; striving for results.

  • An enhanced security clearance will be conducted.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications. Education obtained from out of country must have or be able to obtain, an Education Credential Assessment (ECA) for confirmation of equivalent credentials.
