Position Summary

Your goal in this position is to provide leadership and management in the activities of maintenance and repair of a wide variety of patient care equipment while supporting the Vision, Mission, and values of North York General Hospital. You will be responsible for the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the department including all aspects of the human and financial resources supporting the organization’s strategic objectives. You will also drive quality improvement initiatives and utilize medical technology, data and informatics to optimize healthcare service delivery. This position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and families.

On a practical level, you will

  • Be responsible for the best patient care by ensuring the safe and reliable operation of clinical equipment in all departments and outside facilities
  • Ensure that all preventive and corrective maintenance is performed to standards set forth by department policies and procedures current with accrediting authorities and other governing bodies
  • Provide leadership to the Biomedical Engineering team including the following areas: human resources management including staffing, completion/revision of job descriptions, performance evaluations, managing discipline matters and leading teammate engagement efforts
  • Maintain, compose, and update policies and programs for the department as required
  • Negotiate maintenance, repair and parts contracts for multiple medical equipment modalities
  • Work closely with the Digital Health Department on network connectivity and infrastructure for medical equipment
  • Responsible for the financial management including the development and execution of the department budget
  • Reporting of benchmark and productivity metrics; service and project initiatives; and workload management
  • Ensure a safe working environment for department employees
  • Develop and assist in the development, implementation and coordination of operations and projects which includes; monitoring project timelines and evaluating outcomes using continuous improvement and lean methodologies
  • Participate in construction projects, equipment planning and purchases.
  • Plan and coordinate education initiatives related to medical devices and associated systems
  • Perform cross-functional duties, as assigned and/or as required
  • Maintain current knowledge of pertinent regulatory agencies and the policies, codes, standards, and regulations that apply to the clinical equipment
  • Serve as a reference source for biomedical engineering and clinical staff with regards to appropriate procedures for the operation and maintenance of clinical equipment
  • Carry out actions as required for device hazards alerts, recalls and incident investigations
  • Identify and notify management of any hazards involving medical equipment in clinical areas to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
  • Support Capital Equipment planning activities, and participate in the implementation of capital project initiatives, including active involvement in RFP processes

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biomedical or clinical engineering, or a post-secondary education in Biomedical Engineering, or other related engineering disciplines, required
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of recent experience in the repair and maintenance of clinical equipment with thorough knowledge of technologically advanced medical equipment in a hospital setting, preferred
  • OACETT (The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists), preferred
  • Certification as a Biomedical Engineering Technologist (CBET), preferred
  • Support Centre experience, Required
  • ITIL Foundation certification, Required
