POSITION SUMMARY

Direct Support Providers (DSPs) play a vital role in supporting adults with developmental disabilities to achieve their Individual Support Plan (ISP) goals. DSPs foster independence, build life skills, and encourage community participation in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. This role is essential to promoting quality of life, social inclusion, individual choice, and respect for the rights and responsibilities of the people we serve.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support individuals in working toward their ISP goals and daily living needs.

  • Promote safety, health, and well-being in all activities.

  • Provide assistance with mobility and personal care, including lifts, transfers, and the safe use of mobility equipment when required.

  • Facilitate participation in community programs, activities, and social groups based on individual interests.

  • Implement behaviour plans and other supports as directed by the Case Manager.

  • Encourage and assist individuals to build social networks and meaningful relationships.

  • Accompany individuals to appointments, meetings, and community events; communicate updates to the Case Manager.

  • Provide safe and reliable transportation as required.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of supports, preferences, and activities.

  • Complete reports, MAR sheets, and other required paperwork in a timely manner.

  • Communicate challenges, risks, or barriers to the Case Manager or Supervisor.

  • Attend staff meetings, team meetings, and required training.

  • Work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and split shifts.

  • Keep the Coordinator informed of availability and submit accurate electronic timecards.

  • Adhere to all FCSRC policies and procedures, Ministry Regulations, Standards, Directives and relevant legislation.

  • Responsible for the completion of other related tasks as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • A Secondary school diploma is required, with a Personal Support Worker (PSW), Developmental Services Worker (DSW), or Social Services Worker (SSW) diploma preferred. Must have at least one year of experience supporting adults with developmental disabilities.
  • CPI, CPR, Abuse Prevention, and other relevant training required (or willingness to obtain).
  • Ability to provide safe physical assistance with mobility and personal care.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and communities.
  • Sound judgment, problem-solving ability, and commitment to safety.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining accountability to the team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and anti-oppressive practice.
  • Reliable, flexible, and self-motivated with excellent time management skills.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is considered an asset

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position involves working with individuals in their homes or community-based settings, with occasional attendance at an office.
  • Responsibilities may require working evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice.
  • Regular travel within the county is required, and travel outside the county may also be necessary on a regular or as-needed basis. As Direct Support Providers are responsible for transporting clients, access to a reliable vehicle and possession of a valid full driver’s license are mandatory.
  • The position could involve exposure to sensitive family situations and may occasionally involve managing emotionally charged interactions.
  • The role requires periods of light physical activity. This includes constant sitting, standing or walking, regular handling of lightweight objects (10lbs. weight) or visual attention to detail.
