The Faculty of Business, Communication Studies and Aviation has approximately 4,000 students and includes the EFMD-accredited Bissett School of Business and the School of Communication Studies. The Bissett School of Business offers a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with majors in General Management, Human Resources Management, Accounting, Finance, International Business, Supply Chain Management, and Marketing. Aviation is also part of the Bissett School of Business. The Aviation programs include a Bachelor of Aviation Management (BAM), an Aviation Diploma, and a flight school at our Springbank Aviation Campus. The School of Communication Studies offers a Bachelor of Communication Studies with majors in Journalism and Digital Media, Broadcast Media Studies, Information Design, and Public Relations. In addition to the degrees and majors offered in the Faculty, students may take a variety of minors, concentrations, and certificates to complement their major.
#About the Role
The School of Communication Studies (SCS) at Mount Royal University (Calgary) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We are seeking a versatile scholar-practitioner who can fill critical expertise gaps across the Bachelor of Communication (BCMM) degree, particularly as related to translating complex information and technical data for public audiences; structuring content; developing digital environments and narratives; and testing and validating communication for access, efficacy, and accessibility.
This full-time, tenure-track appointment is offered on MRU’s Teaching–Service pattern (TS) that has a focus on teaching informed by scholarly practice and service rather than research.
Teaching allocation will include:
- courses that reflect one or more content areas such as technical communication, information architecture, usability, and user experience; and
- course redesign and new course development, appropriate to the Bachelor of Communication degree.
Teaching allocation may also include courses that reflect the study of communication and culture, communication theories, media history, and media futures.
We seek candidates who can play a pivotal role in:
- teaching students not just how to create communication artefacts, but how to structure, verify, and develop complex information systems that resist misinformation, enhance understanding, and support evidence-based decision making; and
- preparing the next generations of communicators whose education, work, and careers are undergoing significant transformation in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
##Responsibilities

Instruction: prepare materials for course delivery including course outlines, resources, readings, activities, lessons, assessments, and learning management systems; support and respond to students outside of scheduled class time; deliver assigned courses; and

Course Administration: administer final exams, input final grades upon course completion, and participate in course-related meetings, as required; and
-
Curriculum Integration: Develop and refine course content that serves the distinct needs of the BCMM degree; and
-
Service: contribute to the governance and academic life of the School, Faculty, and University; and
-
Community: At Mount Royal University our community connections are an important and integral part of our programs. The successful candidate will be required to engage with community partners and/or professional associations on behalf of the School.
##Qualifications
- Academic Credentials: Master’s degree with significant professional experience is the minimum requirement for this position.
- Demonstrated expertise in technical writing and editing, information architecture, and user-centred communication.
- Evidence of (or potential for) high-quality university-level instruction and a student-centered approach to learning.
- Exceptional interpersonal, presentation, team-work, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development in equity, diversity, and inclusion and experience ensuring the learning environment is accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population.

Professional industry experience in technical writing, UX design, user analysis, or data analysis.

Experience teaching in a cross-disciplinary environment and with curriculum development.

Experience and currency with industry-standard tools (e.g., MadCap Flare, Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, Plain Language standards).

Experience with Indigenous Relations and established connections to Indigenous communities, including students.
