The Opportunity
General Bank of Canada is looking for a permanent, fulltime Senior Director, Business Development, Commercial Services Group to join as a key contributor with the Bank’s Commercial Services group. Consistent with the growth trajectory of the Bank, this is an excellent opportunity for the right individual to contribute to building the Bank of the future with considerable potential for learning, growth, and advancement.
The Senior Director, Business Development, Commercial Services Group is primarily accountable for driving growth and profitability within the commercial banking division of the Bank by developing and executing strategic business development initiatives. This role will focus on acquiring new business clients, expanding relationships with existing clients/financial partners, and enhancing the Bank’s market position and reputation within the industry.
This individual will collaborate with the Commercial Services Group to set and achieve financial goals, identify potential product offerings, and act as a subject matter expert providing insights and recommendations to Senior Management. As a member of the Commercial leadership team, the Senior Director, Business Development, Commercial Services Group will ensure client satisfaction throughout the business development, underwriting, and funding processes.
Position Responsibilities
Strategic Planning and Execution

Partner with Senior Management to establish and achieve financial objectives, including revenue and profitability targets.

Craft and execute the Business Development strategy alongside the Commercial Services Group to expand the Bank’s commercial banking portfolio.

Identify key clients and growth opportunities within the Bank’s target markets and risk profile to enhance the Bank’s presence and influence in the business banking sector.
Leadership and Coaching
-
Foster a client-focused, results-oriented approach to business development by leading by example.
-
Promote a high-performance culture within the Commercial Services Group by encouraging innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement through mentorship and positively influencing the team.
Client Acquisition and Relationship Management
-
Cultivate and sustain long-term relationships with reputable financial partners and high-value business clients, adhering to the Bank’s risk profile.

Drive profitability by generating opportunities that result in over $200 million in loan fundings annually.

Maintain a prominent and professional presence in business and social communities.
Market Analysis and Competitive Intelligence

Conduct market research and competitive analysis through conferences, client discussions, and industry reports to stay abreast of industry trends, competitor activities, and emerging opportunities.

Leverage market intelligence to refine the Business Development strategy.

Collaborate with the Commercial Services Group and Risk Management to identify potential new products and service offerings.

Serve as a subject matter expert on the business banking landscape, providing insights and recommendations to senior management.
Portfolio Management

Monitor the commercial loan portfolio through the annual review process to identify trends, potential risks, and growth opportunities.

Ensure early identification of potential problem loans in collaboration with the Commercial Services Group and provide strategic recommendations for mitigation or restructuring.

Optimize portfolio performance by collaborating with senior members of the Commercial Services Group to enhance profitability and manage risk metrics.
Risk Management and Compliance

Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and the Bank’s risk management framework in all business development activities.

Monitor the risk profile of the commercial banking portfolio with the Commercial Services Group and implement strategies to mitigate potential risks.

Collaborate with Business Lending Support and legal teams to ensure all client agreements and transactions adhere to internal policies and external regulations.

Pursue the collection of problem commercial loans when necessary.
What You Bring to the Table
Required Qualifications
-
Post-secondary education with a preference for a business-related degree or specialization in business development.
-
Proven track record of managing high value, complex portfolios successfully.
-
10+ years of previous commercial banking experience including expertise in loan syndication's.
-
Financial services experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Knowledge or experience in the aviation industry is considered an asset.
-
Successful history of growing accounts, building robust customer relationships and navigating clients through the sales process.
-
In-depth financial and marketing knowledge of local and national commercial businesses and markets.
-
Strong analytical skills to understand and interpret business financial statements while ensuring effective risk mitigation.
