The Cognitive Disability Strategy (CDS) is focused on providing intervention to support individuals with cognitive disabilities and their family by providing support where mainstream services or programs are not able to respond. The Cognitive Disability Consultant provides mentorship and behavioral supports to individuals, assists families and communities with CDS related questions and supports the application process for those individuals and families when requested.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Initiate, build and maintain positive relationships with intake committee, community agencies, and Ministry of Social Services to connect clients with services.
  • Provide consultation services to intake and planning teams regarding strategies to support behaviour of children, youth, and adults with cognitive disabilities.
  • Provide on-site consultation and follow-up upon request of the intake team for specific clients. Sites can include the home, employment setting, or school.
  • Design behavioural support strategies for specific clients and provides guidance, direction and support for program implementation and evaluation.
  • Provide leadership and direction to CDS intake teams regarding behavioural support strategies for individuals with cognitive disabilities.

Qualifications:

  • Post Secondary Degree in Human Services Field (Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, etc.)
  • Minimum of 3-5 years combined experience working with people with disabilities or varying abilities.
  • Knowledge of issues faced by persons with disabilities and community supports/services to assist them.
  • Ability to foster and maintain good working relationships with clients, families, referral agents, public contracts, and staff members.
  • Knowledge of current best practice for disability services and behaviour support plans.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers licence.

The Saskatchewan Abilities Council is a registered charity and operates under the authority of The Non-Profit Corporations Act, 1995, of Saskatchewan. It is dedicated to providing programs and services to people with disabilities in Saskatchewan.

In 1950, families of children with cerebral palsy believed there could be better education, treatment, and services for their children and others like them; they did something about it and started the Saskatchewan Council for Crippled Children. Within a year, the Council found itself providing services to both children and adults disabled by the effects of polio. To reflect this expansion of services, the name was changed to Saskatchewan Council for Crippled Children and Adults.

In 1984, a desire to emphasize abilities rather than disabilities led to a second name change for the agency. It became the Saskatchewan Abilities Council Inc.

Today, the Saskatchewan Abilities Council is proud to celebrate 60 years of success in delivering recreational, rehabilitation, and vocational programs to more than 35,000 people with disabilities throughout the province.

There are branches located in Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, and Yorkton. There are also five Partners in Employment offices located in Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, and Yorkton. A Special Needs Equipment depot is located in Prince Albert; Manitou Lake is home to Camp Easter Seal; and Provincial Services resides in Saskatoon.
