Academic and Career Services offers a comprehensive range of services to support UWinnipeg students through appointments, drop-ins, workshops, peer mentoring, outreach, educational materials, and digital platforms

The Student Success Advisor is a full-time continuing position that plays a vital role in supporting undergraduate students by offering retention initiatives, proactive outreach, developmental advising and personalized guidance to help students achieve their academic and career goals while navigating university policies and challenges.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports students at academic risk through skills training, resource connection, problem-solving, and motivation strategies.
  • Provides ongoing support and serves as a resource for students throughout their university careers.
  • Identifies students near graduation who have left their studies, offering support for re-enrollment.
  • Connects with students through multiple channels (phone, email, video conferencing, in-person) to provide tailored support.
  • Provides focused outreach to students facing academic or personal challenges, offering relevant resources and first-level counseling.
  • Meets individually with students to help them develop action plans for overcoming obstacles.
  • Refers students to internal university services and external resources.
  • Connects students to tutoring, mentorship programs, and other academic support options.
  • Creates resources to raise awareness of support services available.
  • Implements marketing strategies for the Student Success program.
  • Represents the program on internal committees and workshops, may represent the department at external events.
  • Designs, coordinates and collaborates with other university staff on workshops.
  • Coordinates key aspects of first-year student Orientation, creates informative content and presents at Orientation events.
  • Develops content for Student Success Website.
  • Provides feedback on policies and procedures related to student academic status.
  • Runs and collaborates on designing programs such as the Student Success Coaching Program and USupport
  • Creates reports to accurately identify students who are at risk of attrition, collaborates on creating a system of outreach to provide supports.
  • Maintains statistics for use by internal university stakeholders.
  • Engages in ongoing professional development in best practices in advising, student success and retention.
  • Utilizes data reports to identify students in need of support.
  • Leads the recruitment, selection, and training of eight Student Success Coaches, supervising and motivating them to meet program goals, monitors salary expenditures.
  • Acts as a resource for faculty members using the USupport referral system, may deliver training sessions.
  • Provides academic and first-level career advising to students individually and in group settings, using a developmental advising model.
  • Assists students with academic and first-level career planning.
  • Provides students with accurate information on course, major, degree and graduation.
  • Advises students from various backgrounds, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and awareness of individual circumstances.
  • Provides guidance to students regarding academic status; monitors academic progress and offers strategies for academic success.
  • Interprets and helps students navigate university policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Evaluates registration needs and assists students with registration tools.
  • Assesses students’ circumstances and takes independent discretionary action to authorizes late registrations, course overloads, and academic plans for students, in accordance with university policies.
  • Offers first-level counselling to address student concerns, conflicts, and barriers, providing advocacy and referrals to internal resources and external supports.
  • Collaborates with team members and other campus departments to provide comprehensive support and referrals.
  • Represents the department at events.
  • Assists with training colleagues on aspects related to the Academic Advising job
  • May be called upon to chair, co-chair, or participate in committees.
  • Works closely with faculty and academic departmental staff to facilitate the appeals process and support communication between all parties.
  • Advises students on appeals processes and provides coaching on preparing documentation and gathering evidence.
  • Participates as full member of the Senate Sub-committee on Appeals.
  • Prepares, and presents individual student appeals.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in a related discipline.
  • 3 years of directly related advising and administrative experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, implement, and evaluate programs, initiatives, presentations and workshops that serve students.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and concerns of students.
  • Ability to make independent judgements within department and University policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various levels of internal and external contacts.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate student staff.
  • Strong assessment skills to understand student interests, aptitudes and goals.
  • Ability to collaboratively plan and problem solve to address a range of student issues and make appropriate referrals to a variety of resources.
  • Comfortable working with students from various backgrounds.
  • Ability to take initiative and research current trends and best practices in student retention.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to develop supportive, professional relationships with students and work co-operatively with members of Student Services and the University community.
  • Highly-developed oral and written communication skills with ability to explain detailed information in a warm, clear and concise manner, as well as experience facilitating engaging presentations.
  • Able to make independent and consistent decisions
  • Thorough knowledge of all degree programs and graduation requirements.
  • Familiar with Student Services procedures, Senate regulations and University policy.
  • Creative, well organized and detail oriented.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn the technological aspects of the position including the online registration system and presentation software.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The salary range for this position will be from $57,057.00 to $81,117.40 annually.
