What you'll do
The Real-time Distribution Operations division has an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Team Lead for Distribution
Operations team based at our Fraser Valley Transmission & Distribution System Operations Office in BC. This is a technical
leadership opportunity suitable for someone who has an affinity for teambuilding and establishing and enhancing
relationships with stakeholders in delivering and operating Distribution System at BC Hydro.
The successful candidate will be expected to lead a group of Professional Engineers and EITs, who perform Operations
Planning activities on the distribution systems, and:
- Provide leadership, support and advice to team members, encourage their work initiative, and help them grow as
engineers and technical leaders. Demonstrates BC Hydro’s commitment to a diverse, respectful and inclusive workforce.
- Manage distribution operations studies and prepare assorted technical reports, operating plans and revise procedures
including operating orders.
- Supervise user acceptance testing and commissioning of updates to Advanced Applications and or new applications
(SCADA, EMS, ADMS, CROW, PowerON etc.), including Operating Order updates for these applications.
- Supervise the preparation of distribution and stations outage plans in consultation with transmission counterparts, and the
ongoing coordination of outages between customers, service providers and Key Accounts.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and create a safety culture where safety is first, and employees are
recognized for safe performance and compliance with safety regulations and safe work practices. Ensures team members
have applicable safety training for their work, the activities in the annual safety plan are completed, and team members
perform their work safely.
- Supervise activities that demonstrate and meet PSSP compliance including, but not limited to, preparation of energization,
switching plans, voltage conversion and load management plans.
- Provide technical leadership and acts as an expert technical resource responsible for providing professional/technical
advice in Distribution Operations within and outside the department.
- Prepare or review technical reports, presentations, standards, specifications, guides, or other such documents that
provide engineering expertise.
- Appraise staff performance and provides input into an employee development program in order to maintain the required
expertise. Assists the Sr. Manager Distribution Operations & Outage Scheduling in staff selection, training and
recommending promotions. Develop and implement an employee development program in order to maintain/cultivate the
required skills and expertise. Foster collaboration and knowledge transfer, coaching and mentoring, and organizational
awareness.
- May be required to chair meetings to address operations engineering problems in area of expertise and to attend and
address seminars, courses, meetings, and conferences.
- May be assigned duties as an operating committee co-chair for interconnected operations with Distribution IPPs, Major
Customers and other stakeholders, for activities defined in operating orders as necessary.
- Ensure that qualified internal and external resources are available and have the required expertise and tools to meet work
plans; allocates resources to various activities within the work program; assigns and coordinates work, and provides
instructions, advice and technical guidance to other engineers, project and technical staff; reviews work in progress and
assesses completed work for accuracy, required results and compliance with quality assurance standards and procedures.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, for the preparation of distribution operating procedures, standards,
investment or System Improvement plans, outage analysis, and coordination of operations (including outage coordination).
- Collaborates, builds, and maintains relationships with other Engineering Teams, Asset Planning, Interconnections,
Technology, Project Delivery, Capital Construction, Real-time Operations (RTO), Stations Field Operations as well
asExternal Service Providers to advance the delivery of BC Hydro’s overall work plan.
- Coordinate the update and release of operating orders to support new equipment commissioning, real time system studies
and new operating procedure requirements.
- Review, enhance and develop methods, procedures and technical standards to take advantage of new technology.
- Support Sr. Manager Distribution Operations & Outage Scheduling `on various initiatives. The Team Lead may
supportCompany wide initiatives and be an active part in developing those initiatives.
- Coach and mentor team members to investigate and analyze challenging or unusual technical problems, evaluate risks
and develop solutions to problems.
- Lead, support and coordinate in the development, design and implementation of Advanced Distribution Management
System (ADMS)
- Perform other duties as assigned to address changing work requirements for the department.
What you bring
- Have a Bachelors' Degree or Higher in Electrical Engineering; Power Systems focus with specialization in Distribution
Systems is an asset.
- Be a Registered Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C (EGBC) or eligible for registration.
- Have a minimum of 10 years of engineering industry experience. Stronger candidates with lesser experience may be
considered at a corresponding position level.
- Demonstrated ongoing development such as self-study, attendance at technical and administrative courses and
participation in technical and professional society.
- Demonstrate proficiency in use of CYMDIST, modelling, load flow studies, EMS, PI etc. Previous experience in design,
implementation or end-user with ADMS will be considered an asset.
- Ability to analyze and resolve challenging and unusual engineering problems with considerable independence and
understand and appreciate implications of reliability, operability and safety.
- Have prepared a body of system study work, developed distribution standards, designs, outage and contingency reports,
operating procedures, and/or outage planning contingencies and use of analytical tools for distribution system assessment.
- Have established relationships with Transmission, Generation, Distribution planning groups, and Operations teams, and
other stakeholders in Safety, Engineering, SFO, LFO and NIA
- A strong leader with a track record of modeling BC Hydro's core values and in building trust in all relationships at multiple
levels.
- Demonstrated record of making difficult business decisions, with imperfect information, and with consideration to the
short-term and long-term implications of that decision on the organization.
- Ability to engage employees in a vision, inspires confidence in their leadership, and creates a sense of purpose and an
environment which is viewed as safe by the team.
- Demonstrated strategic thinking, leadership, and business planning skills.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with business partners across BC Hydro.
- Successful, creative, and persistent approach to influencing outcomes and meeting objectives.
- Excellent organizational and management skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with an ability to adjust the communication style for different internal and
external audiences with and without TDSO background
- Previous people leadership experience would be an asset.
- Previous TDSO experience direct/indirect would be an asset.
