About the role

Description The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Senior Research Associate . This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The Senior Research Associate will play a critical role in the high-level leadership of the group, working closely with the Principal Investigator to determine the course of the group. This will include contributing to research and funding strategies, identifying and helping to secure funding opportunities and shaping the vision, direction and structure of the group.

The Senior Research Associate will play a key role in all activities undertaken by the research team spanning from hands-on technical tasks to high level leadership and visioning. This position will be responsible for all project level management of the team, including budgets. They will prepare and submit documentation and other deliverables, technical and financial, required by funding agencies and collaborators.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Research, Publications and Presentations:

  • Conduct research and provide documentation for use in scholarly publications
  • Write scientific papers in the areas of patient engagement, patient experience and person-centred care
  • Identify and pursue national and international research funding opportunities
  • Represent team at national and international meetings, conferences and seminars

Team Leadership:

  • Along with the Principal Investigator, develop and implement the strategic vision of the research group, and each of the research projects
  • Act as a primary liaison between the PE, research team and collaborators
  • Participate in high level funding and research strategy sessions
  • Develop operating procedures, and makes recommendation on workflows
  • Mentor graduate students on the team
  • Trains new students in team procedures
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
  • Demonstrate strong communication and team skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines

Project Management and Budget:

  • Be responsible for the successful completion of projects from conception to completion
  • Monitor and control the schedule, budget, quality and risk of projects undertaken by the research team
  • Plan team and project budgets

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD in health services research required
  • 5+ years of related experience
  • 5+ years of project management skills and experience
  • Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders
  • Generating and maintaining new collaborations
  • Ability to provide technical support for others on research issues
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in conducting research
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Demonstrated communication, organization, innovation and interpersonal skills
  • Advanced or expert skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience in technical writing and extensive experience presenting at seminars and conferences
  • Experience in grant writing with a proven track record of obtaining academic and or commercial funding
  • Must be organized and be able to work independently with no supervision
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy is required
  • Be resourceful, innovative and strategic in problem solving
  • Must be able to function as a productive team member
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
