Position: Industrial Controls Technician
Location: Colborne, ON.
Reports to : Facilities and Maintenance Manager
CCC Plastics is seeking an Industrial Controls Technician for our Colborne location who will support the digital transformation of our manufacturing processes. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading projects to integrate various smart technologies such as IIoT connections, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to enable real-time data exchange, predictive maintenance, and enhance productivity. They are responsible for installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration of our automated systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), motor control circuits, sensors, instrumentation, and control networks. The Industrial Controls Technician collaborates with the manufacturing, engineering and maintenance departments to ensure production processes are optimized to improve safety, quality, and efficiency.
Key responsibilities:
- Ensure industrial control systems conform with all relevant regulations and standards, including the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, CSA, Occupational Health & Safety and Industrial Regulations.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives, including participating in incremental Kaizen events to identify safety and productivity improvements.
- Implementation of Industry 4.0 smart factory technologies, including IIoT devices, artificial intelligence tools, machine-learning, and industrial network protocols such as Ethernet/IP and OPC UA.
- Manage the plant SCADA system for connected machines using the Ignition software platform.
- Configure managed and unmanaged ethernet switches, including VPN routers facilitating remote access to machines.
- Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix PLC programming and troubleshooting using Rockwell Studio 5000 and GuardLogix software.
- HMI programming and troubleshooting using FactoryTalk View Studio software.
- Use of VFD software such as Connected Components Workbench (CCW) to configure, monitor, and simulate motor drives.
- Define, manage, and execute preventative maintenance of controls systems, including firmware and software and periodic replacement of hardware.
- Manage software licensing and remote tech connect services and contracts.
- Manage program and parameter backup files for PLC, HMI, VFD, and Brabender feed systems.
- Maintain predictive maintenance sensors and gateways.
- Verification of temperature, flow, and pressure sensors, including coordinating periodic calibration of analytical instrumentation used for testing.
- Installing and configuring new controls systems and integrating third-party components.
- Data analysis and documentation control including creating reports, drawings, diagrams, and schematics using programs such as Autodesk and Microsoft Visio software.
- Maintaining building automation systems as required.
- This position will support the maintenance staff as required.
- This position will require occasional travel to the USA.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering preferred.
- Two or three-year diploma in electrical engineering technology will be considered.
- Industrial Electrician 442A Red Seal certification is a definite asset.
- Automation and controls certifications are a definite asset.
- 3 – 5 years experience in plastics extrusion and compounding manufacturing environment is a definite asset.
- Proficient with Allen-Bradley programmable logic controllers, instrumentation, and variable frequency drives.
- Skilled in implementation, configuration and maintenance of Industry 4.0 smart factory technologies, key concepts and their application, including Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), cloud computing, data and analytics.
- Skilled in implementation, configuration and maintenance of SCADA industrial systems, real-time monitoring, data collection, remote access and control of machinery.
- Competent in use of AutoCAD software with the ability to create, edit, and manage 2D technical drawings.
- Competent in use of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and Planner.
- Exposure to ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Standard is considered an asset.
- Ability to communicate with clarity in all situations including written, verbal and in team settings.
