The Opportunity

The City of Selkirk is currently in search of a Green Team Member to join our team. Under the director of the Urban Forestry & Horticulture Coordinator, the Green Team Member will perform duties in support of urban forestry, horticulture, and naturalization projects and initiatives.

Job Duties

  • Carry out work within public parks, natural areas, playgrounds, athletic fields, municipal building grounds, and other green spaces.
  • Operate a variety of hand tools and small equipment, including weed trimmers, push mowers, roto tillers, chainsaws, pole saws, hedge trimmers, and other motorized equipment.
  • Operate pick-up trucks, with or without trailers, to transport materials as required.
  • Utilize the City’s tree inventory software to conduct inspections and update records as trees are planted, maintained, or removed.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections, routine checks, minor servicing, cleaning, and basic maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
  • Report maintenance needs or safety concerns related to equipment or vehicles to the Manager or Mechanic.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees, contractors, and the public in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy.
  • Provide support under the City of Selkirk Emergency Plan as required.
  • Assist with training or supporting other employees as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications/Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Valid Class 5 or G Driver’s License

  • Valid Chainsaw Safety Certification, or willingness to obtain.

  • Competence with computer systems, including Microsoft Office Suite, email & internet, and the ability to learn new technology as required

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, including understanding instructions.

  • Demonstrated ability to competently operate a pick-up truck with an attached trailer, or willingness to learn.

  • Physically capable of performing all duties associated with the position.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts.

  • Applicants must be between 15 to 29 years of age.

Desired Qualifications shall include:

  • Completion of Post-Secondary courses, preferably in forestry, environmental science, biology, agriculture, or horticulture.
  • Experience in horticulture, landscaping, forestry, or tree maintenance.
  • Experience operating landscape maintenance equipment such as weed trimmers, push mowers, roto tillers, chainsaws, and pole saws.

Comments

This is a Casual Non-Union position working various hours up to 40 hours a week based on a flexible schedule. This position is excluded from the Collective Agreement and is open to all applicants. Applications will be accepted until May 15, 2026 at 4:00 p.m.
