Job Description

We are currently seeking an Estimating Manager to support our Mining, Energy, Infrastructure, and Nuclear teams, based out of Calgary, AB. The Estimating Manager will be responsible for overseeing estimating activities within a global business unit. This role provides technical guidance, training, auditing, and staffing support to the Estimating organization. It also offers leadership in setting strategic direction, aligning teams, and motivating staff. The Estimating Manager delivers guidance and training on both project- and program-level tasks.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Reviews and approves estimate preparation plans and basis.

  • Reviews and approves all major estimates. Readily analyzes estimating data and correlates to other projects and Bantrel/Bechtel standards. Responsible for the quality and integrity of estimates produced by the team. Ensures that lessons learned are incorporated into estimates. Audits to ensure the quality of estimating functions.

  • May assist in development of Contingency, Risk, and Fee (CRF). Recommends level of contingency and risk required for management decisions.

  • Reviews estimate basis and assumptions for completeness and reasonableness.

  • Provides direct input to proposals, strategic plans, client presentations, and contract negotiations.

  • Participates in proposal budget development to ensure that the estimating deliverables are in accordance with the scope.

  • Leads and directs discussions in management reviews. Presents proposal and engineer’s estimates to senior management and clients.

  • Participates in quality Audits on projects as required.

  • Recommends potential Estimating candidates for employment, decisions regarding re-deployment of staff during project de-staffing. Interviews candidates and makes recommendations for employment decisions.

  • Responsible for performance evaluation process and career counseling for assigned personnel. Participates and recommends potential performance-based compensation during annual review period.

  • Provides technical guidance, technical and operational supervision to the Estimating Department.

  • Participates in developing and presenting training classes on designated subjects and on-the-job training for specific processes and practices.

  • Implements estimating training programs which include developing curricula, selecting instructors, teaching, and monitoring effectiveness of programs.

  • Develops Estimating Department policies, standards, and procedures. Coordinates with Bechtel on applying the best standards, policies and tools.

  • Provides input to operating plans, department budgets, forecast and other corporate financial reports.

Qualifications

  • An Engineering Degree, Technical School diploma or equivalent work experience. Continuing self-development in relevant areas relating to Estimating and/or Project Controls Management.

  • Demonstrates an ability to interact with corporate management and client on a regular basis.

  • More than 12+ years of experience in increasingly more responsible roles within Estimating and/or Project Controls and on projects ranging from small to large. Should have significant exposure to projects considered as mega-projects and with the unique issues associated with that type of project.

  • Must be willing and able to work with minimal supervision on tasks of significant commercial importance to Bantrel.

  • Supervisory experience on projects of all sizes combined with the ability to interact with corporate management and client as required.

  • Capable of operating with a high degree of latitude, exercising independent judgment within a corporate framework.

  • Demonstrated skill in formulating and presenting new concepts for corporate estimating.

  • Experience with different methods of estimating to handle Class I-V estimates.
