Earth Sciences is the science of the planet Earth. We seek to understand the Earth's internal structure and composition; its dynamic character (earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics); the processes that occur within it; the processes that shape its surface and the materials that constitute its surface layers; the connections between Earth’s surface processes, climate and our environmental sustainability; the origin, occurrence, extraction and conservation of the Earth's natural resources (minerals, fossil fuels, soils, and water); the place of the Earth within the Solar System, and the history of life on Earth.
Western's Department of Earth Sciences is a close-knit and dynamic department combining cutting edge academic and applied research with strong mentorship and teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Course Information
Acquisition of solutes by rain, surface and subsurface waters and their transportation and deposition in
natural environments (e.g., formation of ore deposits). Natural sources of potential pollutants (e.g.,
heavy metals). Geochemical cycles of solutes and waters. This cours runs: Monday Lecture 12:30 - 1:30 PM, Wednesday Lecture 12:30 - 1:30 PM,
Tutorial Wednesday 1:30 - 2:30 PM
Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
¿ communicate effectively using a working vocabulary of geochemical terms
¿ explain how water obtains its chemical composition in natural environments (rain, soils, ground water, oceans)
¿ describe how geochemical processes modify water compositions 2
¿ relate the chemistry of minerals to natural waters through weathering, precipitation and oxidation reactions
¿ manipulate data to interpret natural processes and identify geochemical processes
¿ evaluate how geochemical data is used in primary research to reveal chemical tracers of processes in nature like weathering, pollution, evaporation and ocean circulation
¿ compare processes that result in beneficial versus detrimental concentrations of elements in natural waters
¿ predict which geochemical processes have been involved in a water’s evolution
¿ predict whether a mineral is stable in water under various natural conditions
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.
Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant discipline (or be close to completion) and a demonstrated record of high performance and expertise teaching at the university-level the specific subject area of any course for which they apply. Preference will be given to experience in teaching or researching in the specific subject area of the course applied for.

Course offerings could be assigned to the workload of full-time faculty or to part-time faculty with seniority or preference rights in accordance with the Faculty Collective Agreement, or left unfilled based on operational/enrolment requirements. All positions are subject to budget approval.
