We are currently recruiting for: Fiberline Expert or Fiberline Process Specialist (Chemical Engineer) - Permanent – Fulltime

Role Overview

The successful candidate will be the subject-matter expert (SME) for the Fiberline operations by providing advanced troubleshooting support for chronic or complex issues.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Process Optimization - Lead optimization of digestion, washing, oxygen delignification, bleaching, and screening processes. Identify opportunities to reduce chemical consumption, improve pulp yield, lower energy and water usage, and enhance fiber quality.
  • Adjust operating parameters (temperature, chemical dosages, flows, residence times) to maintain or improve pulp quality (e.g. fibre length, brightness, strength, yield) and consistency.
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies, enzymes, or chemicals for pulp production.
  • Troubleshoot fiberline process issues: root cause analysis when fiber quality or production suffers, and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Collaborate closely with maintenance to plan reliability improvements, preventive / predictive maintenance (e.g. for digesters, washers, screens).
  • Track and report key performance indicators (KPIs) for the fiberline: pulp yield, brightness, strength, chemical consumption, energy / water usage, downtime, etc.
  • Assist with start-ups, shutdowns, and transitions (e.g. during planned or unplanned outages).
  • Data & Performance Monitoring - Analyze production and lab data; track KPIs such as pulp yield, kappa number, brightness, viscosity, chemical use, downtime, etc.
  • Establish targets, goals, and objectives for the Fiberline to improve the level of service to the organization.
  • Coach and mentor employees to ensure maximum performance
  • Ensure that operators, engineers, and technical staff are trained to meet the technological requirements of the Fiberline within facility and develop advanced training materials such as SOP’s.
  • Prepare proposals for annual capital budget requests. Implement & management of the sanctioned projects.
  • Ensure departmental compliance with health, safety, and environmental legislation EMS (ISO 14001) standards

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Pulp & Paper Technology, and Process Engineering.
  • Minimum of 10-15 years’ experience in Fiberline operations in a pulp mill: digestion, washing, bleaching, screening, etc.
  • Strong understanding of pulp & paper processes (specialist pulping, bleaching stages, pulp washing, brownstock screening, etc.) and fiber quality parameters.
  • Familiarity with process control systems, instrumentation, measurement of chemical and physical pulp properties.
  • Good problem solving and root cause analysis skills.
  • Ability to analyze data, interpret trends, and recommend / implement process improvements.
  • Pulp & Paper Supervisory and/or Management experience is required
  • Knowledge or experience with cost control, budgeting, chemical inventory management.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organization and leadership skills are essential.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office
