Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Construction Electrician
  • Red Seal Construction Electrician.
  • Construction Journeyperson Electrician.
  • Must hold a valid Class 5 Manitoba Drivers License.

LEVEL OF FORMAL EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma (Grade 12).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 5 years - extensive position related experience.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, City of Winnipeg Electrical By-Laws and the City of Winnipeg Electrical Technical Interpretations.
  • Good communication skills to negotiate, coordinate and facilitate work with customers, co-workers, jurisdictional authorities and other trades.
  • Must be able to communicate and capable of following and executing instructions in English (verbal and written)
  • Must be able to work independently or in teams with minimal supervision.
  • Must have good organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Must understand and be willing to participate in all safety programs and initiatives designed to ensure the well-being of all staff.
  • Ensure the safety of yourself and others in the work environment.
  • Knowledge of the different types of personal protective equipment and when to use them.
  • Must be self-motivated, dependable, conscientious, and take pride in quality workmanship.
  • Experience with 5-24kV Distribution Systems preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The work environment across the University includes high rise buildings, academic and research facilities with laboratories, libraries, lecture theatres, office spaces, residences for students and recreational space for an active staff and student population of approximately 40,000.
  • Industrial spaces also exist for essential campus services including high pressure steam and high voltage electrical distribution, water storm and waste networks, as well as tunnels, confined and restricted access spaces.
  • The full ranges of municipal services are delivered across campus including mail, parcel and parts delivery, garbage and recycling pickup, snow removal and roads and grounds maintenance.
  • Outdoor spaces are included in the work environment and the inherent climactic conditions include winter and summer temperature variations that range from extreme cold to extreme heat.
  • Most work is physically demanding and some work environments present hazards that involve safe work procedures and precautions.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to pass required FIT assessment and related safety training. Must be able to work in awkward, confined spaces and high locations.
  • Must be able to perform related duties as assigned.

OTHER:

  • May be required to work at the Fort Garry or Bannatyne Campus.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality is required.
  • Will be required to provide acceptable Criminal Record and Vulnerable Persons Registry checks.

Key responsibilities

Characteristic Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Plan, assemble, install, alter, repair, inspect, verify, commission, operate and maintain electrical systems.
  • Installation and maintenance of communication systems such as voice, data, audio, video and signaling systems.
  • Commission and decommission electrical systems.
  • Installation and maintenance of heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) systems.
  • Performs lock-out and tagging procedures.
  • Use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Organize projects in order to safely and efficiently use material, labour, tools and equipment.
  • Must read and interpret electrical, mechanical, civil and architectural drawings and specifications.
  • Utilize schematics and wiring diagrams to perform tasks such as diagnosing, maintaining and installing systems.
  • Install and maintain service entrance, distribution equipment, electrical panels, transformers, motor control centres, motor starters and VFDs.
  • Install both above and below ground raceways and cables.
