Payroll Clerk, On-Call

Reporting to the Manager of Accounting and Payroll and guided by a commitment to service excellence, this position is responsible for a broad range of confidential payroll duties. Key responsibilities include assisting with bi-weekly payroll processing, reviewing contract information, supporting employees with Unit4 system inquiries, providing backup coverage for departmental staff, and performing other related tasks as assigned.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Supports Payroll Officers in administering bi‐weekly payrolls in accordance with current collective agreements, legislation and benefit carrier regulations:

  • Entering, and ensuring the accuracy of data input to Unit4
  • Preparing timely source deduction remittances and reconciling to Canada Revenue Agency reports
  • Running closing reports for bi‐weekly payrolls
  • Reviewing contract data for Work‐study Temporary Employment contracts, unionized and exempt positions
  • Preparing union dues statements, Canada Revenue Agency payments, and journal entries for computer loan payments, employee donations and payroll import files
  • Interfacing and confirming Unit4 data
  • Responds to payroll inquiries, including requests for assistance from staff and external agencies, inquiries around payroll benefit balances, timesheet discrepancies, reviewing and responding to Canada Revenue Agency discrepancies
  • Provides backup/relief for other departmental staff

Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Good working knowledge of computerized payroll programs, preferably Unit4/Agresso

  • Proficient with database concepts and familiar with extracting data in report form in at least one type of database

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Ability to work in a multi‐tasking environment

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Ability to meet deadlines

Education and Experience

  • High school graduation
  • 2 years of post-secondary education in Business Administration/Accounting, and 2 of the 3 courses in the Payroll Compliance Practitioner Certification (PCP) with the intent of completing the program.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of payroll experience

This is an on-call (0%) position, commencing as soon as possible. Salary will be Pay Grade 8, $33.38 per hour in accordance with the PPWC Collective Agreement.
