Position Summary

The Quality Controller is responsible for performing high-level quality reviews in accordance with the Dowco Quality Control Program (QCP). This role verifies the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of steel detailing models, connections, shop drawings, and erection drawings against design documents, applicable codes, customer standards, and fabrication practices.

The Quality Controller provides technical oversight, guidance, and support to

detailing and checking teams, responding to technical questions and assisting with issue resolution as required. While the primary responsibility of the role is quality review and verification, the Quality Controller may, when necessary due to schedule or project constraints, implement corrections or adjustments directly to models or drawings to support timely project delivery.

The Quality Controller works collaboratively with Project Managers, Senior

Quality Controllers, and production teams to ensure quality issues are identified, communicated, resolved, and documented in alignment with company processes. 

 

Position Duties

  1. Quality Review & Compliance
  • Perform high-level reviews of 3D models, connections, shop drawings, and erection drawings in accordance with the Dowco QCP, document findings and required corrective actions.
  • Verify compliance with design drawings, specifications, engineering codes, customer standards, and accepted fabrication practices.
  • Conduct in-model reviews during ABM and connection stages, and drawing reviews during editing stages.
  • Review product design and detailing output for accuracy, completeness, and constructability.
  • Identify, document, and report deficiencies in work quality.
  1. Issue Resolution, Documentation and Technical Support
  • Identify, document, and communicate quality issues and required corrections to detailing and checking teams.
  • Respond to technical questions from detailers, checkers, and production staff related to modeling, connections, drawings, and standards.
  • Provide guidance and clarification to support efficient issue resolution and prevent rework.
  • When required due to time constraints or project priorities, implement corrections directly within models or drawings, ensuring changes are documented and communicated to the project team.
  • Ensure corrected work continues to comply with the Dowco QCP and project requirements.
  • Perform drawing markups clearly identifying required corrections or revisions.
  • Ensure models and drawings are corrected when errors are identified.
  • Suggest appropriate connections or clarifications where structural drawings lack sufficient information.
  • Prepare and review RFIs, EWOs, and Technical Queries (TQs) as required to resolve design or scope issues.
  1. Standards, Codes & Best Practices
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of applicable engineering codes, industry standards, and drafting principles.
  • Ensure detailing output aligns with current industry, fabrication, and company standards.
  • Stay current with evolving drafting, modeling, and detailing practices.
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship
  • Provide constructive, technical feedback to detailers and checkers to improve accuracy and consistency.
  • Support and mentor Junior Quality Controllers and less experienced detailing staff.
  • Assist project teams by providing technical guidance during detailing and checking operations.
  1. Collaboration & Project Support
  • Work collaboratively with Project Managers, Senior Quality Controllers, and detailing teams to support project schedules and client expectations.
  • Ensure drawing and model packages meet quality requirements prior to issue.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to quality, standards, and processes.

 

Minimum Experience & Qualifications

  • 6–10 years of experience in structural steel detailing and/or checking.
  • Class II NISD Certification or equivalent approved by the Quality Assurance Manager, is an asset.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience using Tekla Structures or similar 3D CAD software.
  • Strong understanding of steel detailing practices, fabrication methods, and construction documentation.
  • High attention to detail with strong spatial visualization and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines while maintaining quality standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision while supporting team objectives.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn, adapt, and continuously develop technical and interpersonal skills.

 

Assets and Future Development

  • Level 1: Quality Management Training (Six Sigma) and Tekla Evaluation
  • Level 2: BIM Certification, Dowco Processes Exam, and Tekla Evaluation
  • Level 3: NISD Detailing Class I (or equivalent approved by QA Manager) and Tekla Evaluation

At DeSimone Consulting Engineering, we’re committed to transparency—especially

when it comes to compensation. The salary range listed reflects what we believe, in good faith, is a fair and competitive range for this role based on the market and location.

The hourly hiring range for this role is anticipated to be $33.00 - $42.00

dependent upon experience and qualifications. Most candidates are typically hired near the midpoint of the range, ensuring a balanced and equitable approach across our team.

That said, we recognize exceptional talent. In cases where a candidate brings
