Senior Human Factors Engineer – Flight Deck Design
Location: Montreal, Quebec (Hybrid – 3 days per week onsite) Salary: $137,500-$166,100 DOE + Comprehensive Benefits Package Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Hybrid (3 days onsite, 2 days remote)
Envisage Recruitment are partnering with a leading aerospace engineering organisation to recruit an experienced Senior Human Factors Engineer for a permanent opportunity based in Montreal. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the design, evaluation, and certification of next-generation flight deck interfaces. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, you will apply Human Factors expertise to develop intuitive, safe, and compliant cockpit solutions through requirements capture, simulation, prototyping, usability evaluation, and certification activities.
The successful candidate will have extensive experience in cognitive ergonomics, flight deck Human-Machine Interface (HMI) design, and aerospace certification, together with the ability to collaborate with flight crews and cross-functional engineering teams to deliver innovative cockpit solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Conceptualise, design, evaluate, and support the certification of flight deck interfaces through requirements capture, prototyping, simulation, analysis, and usability testing. Apply cognitive ergonomics expertise to support the design, analysis, and validation of Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI). Support requirements development, task analysis, and human error analysis activities. Develop flight deck HMI simulations and functional prototypes. Create and manage Human Factors documentation for new aircraft programmes, major cockpit modifications, and sustaining engineering activities. Plan and deliver User-Centred Design (UCD) activities for flight deck interface development. Perform scenario-based flight deck and User Experience (UX) evaluations in line with established flight deck design philosophy. Collaborate with flight crews to evaluate cockpit usability from both physical and cognitive perspectives. Support aircraft certification activities relating to Human Factors regulations, including FAR/CS 25.1302 compliance. Work across multiple aircraft programmes and engineering platforms to deliver consistent Human Factors solutions.
The Person
You will ideally have: Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science, together with a qualification in Cognitive Ergonomics, Psychology, Industrial Design, or a related discipline. Around 10 years' experience within the aerospace industry, with strong knowledge of aircraft systems, flight operations, regulatory requirements, and industry design standards. Practical experience in cognitive ergonomics, including cognition, perception, decision making, workload assessment, situation awareness, and human error analysis. Understanding of physical ergonomics principles, including anthropometry, reach, strength, and vision. Experience developing and evaluating Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) and flight deck usability. Knowledge of aerospace design standards such as MIL-STD, SAE ARP, ARINC, or equivalent. Strong proficiency with engineering software and the ability to quickly learn new digital tools. Excellent planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills with experience designing and executing validation and verification activities. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; French would be advantageous. A proactive, organised, and collaborative approach with excellent technical judgement and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced engineering environment.
