Position: Utilities Manager - Emerald Lake Lodge

Report to: General Manager

Department: Utilities

Hours: As Required

Primary Function: As the Utilities Manager at Emerald Lake Lodge, you'll be the cornerstone of our operational infrastructure. This pivotal role demands a versatile professional to oversee, maintain, and optimize our complex utility systems. You'll lead a dedicated team in ensuring the seamless operation of our power generation, water treatment, wastewater management, and other critical systems that keep our picturesque mountain lodge running smoothly. Your expertise will be crucial in maintaining the delicate balance between modern comfort and environmental stewardship in our unique alpine setting.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1.System Management and Optimization:

  • Oversee the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of ELL's utility systems, including power generation and distribution, water treatment and distribution, wastewater treatment and collection, fire systems, and more.
  • Conduct daily system checks, maintain meticulous parameter logs, and perform data analysis to ensure all systems operate within optimal ranges.
  • Proactively identify and address potential issues, minimizing downtime and maximizing efficiency.
  • Uphold and acquire certifications as needed
  1. Team Leadership and Development:
  • Lead and inspire a team of approximately 4 skilled professionals in the Utilities Department.
  • Foster a positive team culture that embraces the "One team, one resort" philosophy.
  • Oversee recruitment, training, performance management, and professional development of team members.
  1. Operational Excellence:
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance plans and schedules for all utility systems.
  • Manage inventory of equipment, spare parts, and consumables to ensure operational continuity.
  • Collaborate with other department heads to align utility operations with overall lodge objectives.
  1. Safety and Compliance:
  • Ensure all operations adhere to safety standards, environmental regulations, and operating permits.
  • Implement and maintain safety protocols, including confined space procedures, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.
  • Stay current with industry best practices and emerging technologies in sustainable lodge operations.
  1. Emergency Response and Problem Solving:
  • Be on-call to respond to emergencies outside normal working hours.
  • Demonstrate quick thinking and decisive action in addressing urgent operational issues.
  • Develop and refine emergency response procedures for various scenarios.
  1. Administrative Duties:
  • Manage department budgets, payroll, and scheduling.
  • Prepare reports on system performance, efficiency improvements, and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation for all utility systems and operations.

Requirements/Experience:

  • Proven experience in utility management, preferably in a remote or hospitality setting.
  • Strong technical knowledge of power generation systems, water and wastewater treatment, and general mechanical/electrical systems.
  • Certifications in Small Wastewater System Operation and Small Water System Operation (or willingness to obtain).
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate various types of vehicles and equipment.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to system maintenance.
  • Proficiency in computer systems, including Microsoft Office and specialized utility management software.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment, often extending beyond regular working hours.
  • Physical capability to perform tasks in various conditions, including confined spaces and at heights.
  • Commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable operations.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interact professionally with staff, guests, and external contractors.
