About the role

What You’ll Do

As AVP, Data & AI Governance, you will lead Canadian Tire’s enterprise-wide data governance strategy, driving the organization to the forefront of responsible data management and AI enablement. This role is pivotal in operationalizing robust frameworks, ensuring compliance, and fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making. You will collaborate with senior leaders, business units, IT, and external partners to build Canadian Tire’s reputation as a leader in data and AI innovation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and evolve data and AI governance frameworks, policies, and standards across the enterprise.
  • Lead a team focused on data and AI governance, including awareness, stewardship, metadata, data quality, master data, and operationalization of AI governance.
  • Represent governance progress to executive committees and the Enterprise Risk Committee on a quarterly basis.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and prioritize data needs, ensuring timely and accurate analysis.
  • Partner with internal and external audit teams to identify and close governance gaps.
  • Drive continuous improvement in data quality standards and data management processes.
  • Oversee the implementation of data governance policies, procedures, and best practices to maintain data integrity, security, and reusable data assets.
  • Monitor KPIs related to data enablement, tracking progress and communicating results to stakeholders.
  • Foster a culture of data-driven decision-making by promoting data literacy through training and knowledge sharing.
  • Lead the Data Governance Council with Vice Presidents from across the organization.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and AI regulation, representing Canadian Tire in external forums.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors and partners providing data-related services.
  • Collaborate with IT to ensure scalability, reliability, and performance of data enablement, cloud, and security infrastructure.

What You Bring

  • 10+ years of overall leadership experience in data governance, data management, or related fields.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a quantitative discipline.
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience with data platforms (e.g., Python, Kafka, Spark Streaming, Azure SQL Server, Snowflake, Azure Event Hubs, Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure Data Factory, IBM Watson Knowledge Catalogue, IBM Match 360).
  • Deep knowledge of data governance frameworks, metadata management, and data quality standards.
  • Experience managing third-party vendors and resources, including overseas teams.
  • Proven track record of leading transformation in large, complex corporate environments.
  • Experience supporting enterprise-wide data governance programs, including measuring and monitoring the value of data delivery.
  • Ability to lead continuous evolution of data management processes and technology solutions to meet user and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent technical, analytical, and organizational skills.

  • Mentor and lead cross-functional teams in governance, platform integration, and AI operations.
